  • Wix Designer Tips: Where to find Draft Blog Posts

As a Wix Designer, I get a lot of simple questions from clients that have easy answers, here's the latest, a client asked me today: “I have 4 blog posts on my Wix website , however I can only see the last 3 of them in editor. I can't find the first one I wrote and it's driving me crazy! Where did it go? ” If you wrote a blog post and it disappears from your Published post list, it could be that you didn't publish it and it's in the Drafts folder. See where to find that in the screenshot below: Need help with your Wix Website? Hire an Expert Wix Designer for your next project! Contact us today for a free estimate »

  • Auto Align Images in Photoshop

Here is a trick to auto-align images in Photoshop layers, perfect for creating in-progress artist work animations where it shows the progress of a painting, for example: I cropped this image when done and then created a series of images to use in a gallery on the artist, Rob Gratiot's website, check it out: robgratiot.com/constructing-a-painting

  • How do I make an image fit on Wix?

As a Wix Designer, I often get questions about how to make images work better in Wix website templates. I find that many people get hung up on getting the image to look "just right" on their computer, only to find that it crops differently on a different computer or laptop, so they ask me "How do I make an image fit on Wix?" If you're using an image box, you can control the size and cropping of the image, so you have full control over how it looks and is placed on the screen. But now, most website templates have full-width images, which behave differently depending on the screensize. See the image below, which uses an Image Strip with an image that stretches to the full-width of the browser window: As you can see in the photo above, desktop computers with larger monitors have wider screens & browser windows, which results in stretching full-width images wider. The top and bottom of these types of full-width images will be cut off at different spots depending on the width of the screen – the wider the screen, the more of the top and bottom of the image will be cropped out as it stretches to fill the wider window. Laptops & Tablets are less wide, so the image will be cropped to be more square, showing more of the top and bottom of the image. In Wix, the mobile view has a completely separate editor so you can adjust content easily for the best vertical display on phones. This is nice as you can size images to look good on phones and also resize text and reorder elements to make sure they display well in the mobile view. Watch this video for a more detailed review of how you can adjust the placement of your images in Wix: When selecting an image for a full-width Image Strip in Wix, it is important to pick images that work well as backgrounds and can be cropped without losing important details. For example, you don't want to use a closeup of a group of people, as it will be likely that their heads could get cut off on the top if the image isn't positioned correctly. Sizing images for Wix when using full-width strips: I like to use panoramic proportioned images for most of my image strips, and I also size them to 1980 pixels wide by whatever height they are. Sizing the width of your full-screen images to be 1980 Pixels is a good size as it will look good on big retina screens and small. If you're using images in other ways on Wix, such as in a small box, you can size the image a little smaller if desired to optimize your load time, 400-800 pixels wide or tall would work for most smaller images used on the page. Wix DOES resize your images for you, but it helps to size them down if you're using gigantic high resolution images to help keep your Wix page load time as fast as possible. • How to add a Wix Blog List of Posts

Do you want to add a list of your blog posts to your Wix blog? The old Wix Blog had this built in, and it is a common feature on other blogs like Wordpress, so a lot of our clients ask us if they can add a list of posts to the sidebar of their Wix Blog. See the example below: These types of lists of blog posts are called "Post List" and can be found in the Toolbar on the left of the page under: + Icon > Blog > Custom Feed > scroll down to Post List You can adjust the settings to show different elements for the recent posts list including whether you display Author, Publish Date, Reading Time, Cover Image, Views counter, Comments Counter, Likes Counter, etc. Make sure to click on the various setting sections including Setttings, Display, Layout, and Design to see all the options (and scroll down in each window as more settings are below.) • New Wix Templates

Looking for new Wix templates? As Wix Designers, we offer custom Wix Designer Templates for each of our clients – so every Wix template we work on is fresh and new. We typically will discuss the client needs, any preferences on colors, imagery and fonts, then we will design a custom Wix Designer Template for their website. View more of our Best Wix Websites that we've custom designed, or below are a few new Wix templates that we custom designed for clients: The great thing about Wix websites are that they really aren't using a "template" per say – every page is easily editable and can be customized individually. So unlike other platforms where you have a homepage template and a subpage template, we can custom design each page to work for it's needs without any limitations of "templated" formats. This allows for Wix website templates to be very new and original, as we are not constrained by templates. We will work with you on what to include in your original new Wix website design. There is the main UX (user experience) structure that we will guide you on, including menu items, main messaging, social media links, and how and where to direct users from the homepage. We design every Wix website template including the subpages with ease-of-use in mind. We also optimize each site to work well in the mobile view as well. The above website was a fun one to work on, we enjoy working on garden related designs, and this site, Nutsfornatives.com is all about planting natives in our landscapes to help support wildlife, and also reduce the amount of work, water, fertilizer input in the process. Native plants thrive naturally without so much work, plus they support birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, native bees and other wildlife in our yards. The new Wix Template above was designed for a garden nursery in Encinitas, California: AndersonsLaCostaNursery.com – this was also a fun website to work on as they had so many beautiful images of their plants! The website above is for a Wholesale Food Distributor in Pennsylvania, stanleymarvel.com, this also was a fun new Wix website template to design as we worked with appetite-inducing photos of some of the wholesale foods they offer. • What is the best image size for the Wix column elements?

What is the best image size for the Wix column elements? The best image size depends on the number of columns, as well as their general width to height proportions. If you have a lot of columns, a square image proportion may be best. If the columns are very many and are tall, then a tall vertical image would be best. If just two columns, a square sized image may work best, and so forth. When I'm designing a Wix website, I typically will crop and create images at different sizes and see how they work in the columns - I may create several versions and try them until I find one that fits and flexes just right on different sized screens. For optimizing sizes for better load times, I size all my images at no bigger than 1980 pixels wide for full width image strips or backgrounds. If using a two column strip, however, sizing the images at around 1000 pixels wide would be sufficient. Or, if you are using the images much smaller on the page (not as full screen, but smaller elements), you could reduce the width to 300-800 pixels wide, depending on their size in use. You can also compress JPGs when saving out of your Photoshop or other photo editing program to reduce overall file size by setting the quality to 50-70 quality depending on how the image looks. Hope this helps!

  • Embedding Hubspot Forms on Wix

As a Wix Designer, I sometimes run into problems embedding third-party code on my client Wix websites, and I like to share the solutions as I find them. If you are having trouble in Wix with embedding a Hubspot Form using the HTML widget, you're not alone. My client was dropping the Hubspot Form code into a Wix HTML widget box but it just shows up blank... we couldn't figure out why. But there is an easy fix. This is a common Hubspot with Wix issue, but has an easy fix! You simply have to add an underscore “_” at the beginning of the code. When you do this, the underscore will appear at the top of the form. If you want to get rid of the “_” on the front end, add a font color html to it before and after the underscore. So if your background is white, put this snippet of code in front of your Hubspot code: _ So, here is the example Hubspot Form code: Easy peasy. Happy Wixing! • Google Ads Training & Support

As a Wix Web Designer, I have clients who ask me about PPC Google Ads all the time. I offer SEO Consultations and Optimization for websites where I research keywords and optimize their websites – however, I do not do much with Google Ads and paid advertising, which can compliment natural SEO. SEO is all about researching the keywords for topics you want to be found for, and then optimizing and writing good content on your website to become the expert on those topics. I feel very confident in training and optimizing for SEO, but I'm not as much of an expert at the complicated Google Ads platform (in my opinion, it is NOT user friendly, and very confusing). I've used it for my own ads with small budgets, but don't feel comfortable spending my clients' money on PPC ads yet without knowing the platform better. As I don't have other freelancers or independent people I can personally recommend, and sending my clients to big companies for PPC is not ideal (as they often get wrapped up in long-term expensive contracts), I decided I want to learn how to optimize their Google Ads myself so that I can offer this consulting service as needed to get them setup properly and trained to do ongoing paid ads on Google Ads themselves. I found this great video that walks you through all the steps in creating an ad and what they mean and how to pick the best keywords for cost, I’m going to watch this later, but wanted to share: A couple of my top take-aways from this video: Create a campaign – save money, Uncheck "include Google search partners" Google also has phone support. Here also is Google’s phone number for support: 1-844-245-2553 I'll post my top tips here soon once I have a little more knowledge and experience with Google Ads. I've used them sparingly for years, but never really knew what every setting meant, or how to pick out the best (and lowest cost) keywords to get the most bang for your buck. Stay tuned and watch this great video above for a quick overview of Google Ads. • Wix Designer Demo: 3D Parallax Scrolling

Here is a Wix website design that we're working on for a video game company showing how you can use Wix strips and backgrounds to create layered parallax scrolling that has a 3D look as users scroll downward. This effect is created by using layered Strips in Wix – we use transparent strips (set background color to 0% for full transparency) combined with transparent PNG files used for the strip background. Then, you can layer these strips over top of each other to create a 3D feel to your backgrounds. In this case, we have the main background set to Freeze and then use a Strip with a transparent rock PNG file on top with no scroll effect, then use a parallax scroll for the ships PNG in a second lower transparent Strip, which is staggered down about 150 pixels to give it depth. We may add a fourth layer to this to give it even more depth. We also used transparent PNG black blends to "blend" the images seamlessly together as you scroll down. Of course, you do need to also create the right size/dimensions of PNG files to work well in the concept. We used Photoshop to do this, creating transparent backgrounds on the artwork. This isn't always a quick process, in this case, we created several versions of the images until we were able to get them to do what we wanted. For example, we made 6 different ship PNGs until we had one that was the right size and dimensions to flow and be placed the way we wanted. So while this 3d parallax effect isn't always a super fast one to create, it's worth it if you stick with it and keep modifying the images and strip sizes to get it to perform in a way that looks like a 3D background. • Infographic Designer: Car Reverse Noise

Infographic Design for Car Reverse Noise Pollution: My sister and our new neighbors both have Toyota RAV4s that make a strange, loud ringing/singing sound every time they back-up. They don’t like it, but they do not know how to turn this reverse sound off. From what I read, you can rewire it if you're handy, but it could cause an alert to appear in your dashboard, which is annoying, too. So now we know each and every time my neighbor leaves the house. It’s not a super loud sound, but it carries about half a block at least, so I can hear it inside our house if we have our windows open, or anytime I’m outside, even down the street. The frequent back-up beeps from trucks is bad enough, but now Toyota (and maybe other car makers?) are starting to put these in Hybrids so before you know it, all of our neighborhoods will be riddled with these noises of people coming and going in their vehicles. Hopefully we ask carmakers to stop adding in these car reverse sounds before it gets worse, or if OSHA gets involved and mandates it (if they haven’t already?) What’s funny is, cars have much quieter engines now, especially hybrids when running on battery power, which is wonderful, but now they want to add noise back in! Humans. I am an Infographic Designer and I love working on designing graphics to illustrate ideas to spread the word, concepts, diagrams, or services. View more infographic designs »

  • Wix SEO: Adding Alt Text to your Image Background Strips

Here is a quick tutorial on how to add alt text to your strip images in the Wix website editor: Optimizing your strip images with Alt Text tells Google what the image is, and helps further identify the page for the keywords you want to be found for. It is also helpful for ADA accessibility compliance, as it helps tell people what the image is if they are visually impaired. Need help with Wix SEO? Contact us today for a free estimate.

  • Best Wix Blog SEO

Here are some quick tips for making sure your Wix Blog is optimized for SEO (search engine optimization) so that your blog post articles can be found on Google and other search engines like Bing. Use your blog go answer common customer questions, or address topics that are searched in Google (search Google and then use Google's search suggestions in the dropdown as you search or at the bottom of the search results to get an idea of what other people are searching for relating to the topic you are writing about). You can also use Google AdWord's Keyword Planner tool if you have an account to get an idea of search traffic, or use Keywords Everywhere or other SEO software to get statistics and related searches. Name your blog post with the exact search phrase that Google suggests Add one or more unique images, and add image alt text to them in the image settings, using the same keyword phrases you are blogging about. Keep each one unique, and don't repeat/list/stuff keywords in the alt text, write a good description of the image but start with the keyword phrase you are focussing on. Such as "Wix Blog SEO: Top Tips" and "Wix Blog SEO: Best techniques" etc, etc. Write unique, informative blog articles that answer lots of questions and are useful to your reader. The longer the better, 500-1000+ words is ideal. Write Often! The more you add blog posts to your site, the more pages your website has for search engines and users to find. Include Infographics: or Unique, Useful Graphics: These are more likely to be shared and bookmarked by your readers and could go viral if especially useful or fun. Include Linked Text: Using searched keyword phrases to link to other pages or blog posts on your website can help with SEO. It also helps keep people on your site reading more, and the longer they stay on your site, the more pages they view, the better for your bounce rate and SEO. For example, I have linked Wix Web Designer here to my Portfolio page. Because Wix Web Designer is a search term I want to be found for, this will help Google and people find my portfolio page to see all the Wix Design work I do. It is important in the new Wix Blog that you uncheck the "Link opens in a new tab" if you are linking to a page or blog post on your site, as this is better for usability and keeps the user on your site to keep bounce rates low.

  • Wix is to Powerpoint as Wordpress is to Word

“Wix is to Powerpoint as Wordpress is to Word” This is what one of my clients said as we were discussing her Wix website design. She had built an initial design concept for her website in Powerpoint, and then tried building the design into Wordpress and Squarespace... with no luck! After much frustration, she Googled "easy to use website creator" and discovered Wix. Right away, she said she felt more at ease in designing her site. I agreed, it was about 8 years ago when I first tried Wix, I was originally going to build a client website on Wordpress that I had first designed in Photoshop, but then my husband mentioned that a friend from his band days had used Wix to build his band's website and he liked it, and he suggested I check it out. I did, and I built my client's homepage website in Wix in a matter of HOURS instead of the normal DAYS it took to develop the same custom web design into Wordpress or Squarespace. I felt like I was cheating it was so easy! But from there I started building many of my client websites on the Wix platform, offering training to them so they could edit their own websites easily. While Wix may not be 100% perfect, and it isn't the end-all solution for every client's needs... I'll tell ya, I love designing in Wix! I've designed tons of Wordpress / Squarespace / Shopify / Drupal / Joomla / you name it websites over the years (and maintained them) and I'm not a fan – with WP specifically there are way too many updates / plugin problems / security & hacking issues / difficulty in making simple design changes, etc. It costs a lot more for me to design (or update) a WP site than a Wix site, so with Wix I can design more affordable websites for more clients, especially small businesses whom I love to work with. Plus, the sites don't have to be babysat after they're done. That's a win-win for me. I absolutely LOVE Wix's WYSIWYG editor, it is hands down the best in the biz. Plus, the Wix wizards are always making it better, so I look forward to it growing to be even more amazing over time. Wix changed the game of website design! I now happily design and develop Wix websites for most of my clients, and they love my training on how to edit their sites going forward. Wix is a win-win, I love designing in it, and my clients love how easy it is to keep their websites updated with fresh photos, pages, content, and blog posts. I also offer Wix SEO Consultations so that websites can be found on Google and other search engines. Want to see how great Wix websites can look? • Website Design Templates

As Website Designers, we create custom Website Design Templates for clients nearly every day. We work on various platforms, but find that the Wix Website Design platform is one of the easiest for clients to use and also costs less to design and develop as it is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor (WYSIWYG) and there is little to no programming needed. View more Wix Templates » We typically design website templates, set up the websites, and then train our clients on how to edit their templates overtime to keep their website updated, add new pages, blog posts, and how to add videos, podcasts, and images to pages or galleries over time. My clients love to be able to edit their own Website Design Templates as it allows them to keep their website updated without having to hire a designer every time they want to make a change. • Link Shortener

As a Website Designer, I'm always looking for good tools for different needs. Here's a good one for shorter links: Bndl.in let’s you create a whole suite of shortened and organized links:

  • Wix Forms - Email Notifications Options

Wix recently released a new feature to fix an issue with the Wix Forms Email Notifications – my clients also were confused by the Respond Now going thru Ascend and also that you can't just reply to the email notifications in your email software. I talked with Wix and they worked on a solution! Not sure if this is released to all Wix sites yet, but these new Email Notifications options are a nice feature to have! See screenshot above. To avoid using the Ascend Inbox and the ability to reply directly to Wix Forms' email notifications so that it goes directly to the user, you can now choose "Other Emails" option under Email Notifications which will allow users to reply directly to the email notifications to go to the user (instead of through Ascend). You can still have the submission table for backup, so that's good. Thanks, Wix!

  • Warp Text to Shape in Illustrator

The Envelope Distort tool in Adobe Illustrator is handy for wrapping text or other objects to match the shape of another object. To find this too, go to the top menu and click: Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object. As a Graphic Designer, Logo Designer, and Website Designer, I am always using different tools to create graphics, and I wanted to share this great tool in Illustrator that I use, as sometimes I forget where it's located! So now I have it here for my (and your) future reference forevermore. Need Graphic Design, Logo Design or Website Design? Contact us for a free estimate »

  • Online Art Filter for Photos

As a Website Designer and Graphic Designer, sometimes you want to create some "art" by applying effects to a photograph or graphic. Here is a good tool for quick art effects. Albeit, they don't always look good, and they work differently on different art, but you can get some interesting effects and use in conjunction with Photoshop to make art from photos. Here's the link: www2.lunapic.com/editor/?action=art No app or software needed, this is a browser based art filter for photos. Here's an example of one below, I used Photoshop to put in the green background and grunge edges.

  • Wix Rollover Buttons (Hoverbox)

Here's how you can create a Wix Image Button on your Wix website: The Wix Hoverbox is a way to have animated buttons or interactive features on your site. I don't use these that often, as they do seem to load a bit slower than the rest of Wix content (same goes for animation), but sometimes this is a great solution for something with a little interactivity. Thanks Wix Wizards, this is a long desired tool that brings me back to my Flash days where we could have a little fun with interactive rollover animations. As a Web Designer, I use the Wix platform for many of my clients – it's the best editor I've found so far, and my website clients love it. Wix is always releasing new features, and one of the coolest features recently added is the Wix Hoverbox, which is essentially a rollover button that is fully customizable with animation, videos, images and text. Here is my quick Wix video tutorial on how to add elements such as text or images to your Wix Hoverbox, and how to control the animation, video, image background and more: One quick Wix Designer tip: A lot of users are having issues attaching elements (or pasting elements) to their Hoverbox. To attach any element (text, image, video, etc) to your hoverbox, simply add the element, then click on it to select it (blue outline shows up if selected), and make sure to click and hold down and drag it over the Hoverbox area and you'll see a "Attach to Hoverbox" note that shows up, then unclick (let go) the element, it will now be attached! See screenshot below: You can also resize the Wix Hoverbox by selecting the Hoverbox, then using the resize "handles" (small white circles on edges and corners) to click and drag the box to the size desired. See screenshot: You can also easily apply the background image and settings to either the Regular or Hover instance by clicking on the "Apply to Hover" tool, see screenshot below. Note: you will need to copy and paste and then attach any elements, as the "Apply to Hover" only applies the background image or video, not the elements such as text or other images over top of the Hoverbox background. One last note: you cannot attach a "box" to the hoverbox probably because it is a box, but you can add images/shapes/text etc to the hoverbox by clicking on and dragging any new element onto your hoverbox until you see the "Attach to hoverbox" message and unrelease the element (unclick).

  • Wix Image Button - Hoverboxes

If you want to add a Wix Image Button to your Wix website, watch teh video below to show you how to add an interactive Hoverbox in Wix, using images, text and buttons to link to other pages. Hoverboxes are a nice way to add some animation and interactivity to your Wix website. I do caution that these hoverboxes and animation can slow load time a tad, so use them sparingly. But they can be a nice elegant and visual way to present content or links. Mobile Hoverboxes in Wix: Also, note that hoverboxes do not work on Mobile phones, as you can't "hover" over elements on phones like you can with a mouse cursor on desktops and laptops. On phones, you can choose to display the regular or hover version of your hoverbox. I am a full time Wix Web Designer & Graphic Designer, if you want help designing your website or any design materials such as logo design, infographic design, brochure design, catalog design, etc, please contact me for a free design estimate.

  • Wix Forms Email Notifications getting Blocked? Here's a Fix.

Sometimes I have clients who are not getting the email notifications when their Wix Forms have been filled out and submitted. I spoke with Wix support, and they gave me this information to provide to any email hosting providers if the Wix Form email notifications are getting blocked and not being received in email: Wix IP Address: 167.89.80.130 Email: no-reply@parastorage.com (apparently the form comes through from a masked email that looks like no-reply+bf91f03801d3@crm.wix.com on the user's end) Wix also sent me to this link as well for more info: support.wix.com/en/article/troubleshooting-contact-form-issues It looks like this applies to the old Wix Forms, not the new, but I have a feeling that the IP address is the same.

They are offering some other vegetable seeds this year beyond their 100's of pepper seeds and heirloom tomato seeds from around the world. Roasted green chile is one of the most amazing foods you can eat! • Adding Comments to Wix Blog

As a Wix Designer, I wanted to share this app that I think is decent. In this video above I show how to use the Comments App with the Wix blog, which seems to be less problematic and hassle-free compared to the Wix Blog standard comments that are built-in. The downside, it's free, but after 10 comments or to get notifications, this Comments App by CodeMagic costs $3.97 a month to upgrade.

  • Wix Blog - Change Background Color in Editor

As a Wix Website Designer, I sometimes run into small issues and I like to share the fixes/workarounds as I discover them! Recently, I had a client website that had a black background, so the text is white – and for some reason, the Wix Blog Post Editor was showing a white background, so it's very hard to edit as the text is white on a white background. The background in the post editor was previously black. Simple Fix from Wix Support: I wrote Wix Support, and Michael helped me out. The blog post design for this background was set to Zero for opacity, and this also is the same background used in the post editor. Once adjusted to have the background color at 100%, this fixes the white-on-white issue in the post editor. I'm just leaving this here in case any of you experience the same issue! Here is the editor with the 100% black background now, so I can easily read and edit the white text. Simple fix.

School Infographic designed to show how the Bellevue School District students excel in academics, and what makes them stand out: This New Energy Colorado infographic illustration below was created to show their ideal energy grid that they're working to help implement. Rather than having a one-way energy source, this grid allows for renewable energy from residential and businesses to be used in a circulating system. Learn more about this organization at: newenergycolorado.com This infographic illustration was used as part of their website design: Below is an infographic illustration to educate people are the pollution created by idling cars. Make sure to shut off your car if you pull over to check your GPS or text or call someone back. Don't leave your engine running, it wastes tons of gas and emits a ton of air pollution, even when you're parked. Below is an illustrated infographic design to show how growing your own vegetables shortens your food chain. Just imagine how much plastic, packaging, transportation and energy we are saving by growing more of our own food and supporting local farms. Infographics Layout Infographics layout involves illustrations, sometimes text to convey information or ideas in a visual way. We can also design typography infographics which are built out of type that is artistically arranged to convey a message. As an Infographic Design Agency, we have designed hundreds of infographics over the years. We feel that the best infographic design is when an idea or information is illustrated in a simple, minimal way that immediately visually communicates to the user. Often, while we are working on the infographic design with clients, we illustrate an initial infographic that is too complicated. So, we work together with the client's feedback to simplify the design elements and illustrations to end up with a minimal infographic that quickly communicates the message. Simple infographic design is important as you don't want to overhwelm the viewer. However, sometimes infographics are in-depth and complex, and that works as well if desired. We work with you to custom design and illustrate the best infographic for your needs. Above and below are examples of Infographic Poster Designs. Infographic Poster Design Infographic Design is also great to use for posters or to illustrate information and financials in Annual Reports. This Salmon Conservation infographic poster design above was the final version – we went through several rounds of edits to get client approval once it was just right. • Denver SEO Expert

As a SEO Expert, I was recently invited by Wix to participate in a couple SEO Q&A Webinars hosted by Wix. Check out our live Webinar from last week where us Wix SEO gurus, Kate, Mark and I discuss our top tips for optimizing your Wix websites for SEO. Watch on Facebook: facebook.com/watch/live/?v=662530287662768 Also be sure to check out our comment-based Q&A in this post from Monday: facebook.com/wix/posts/10158139528890429 Lots of great info here! I thought you might enjoy listening to all the SEO tips discussed. I also review some of the top questions I answered in this sister blog post: Wix SEO Hero Questions » A little about me: I am a long-time Website Designer and Graphic Designer, I started offering SEO Services several years ago as I was finding that many local and national big SEO firms seemed to charge a lot of money and not actually do any on-website SEO work. Which, in my opinion, is what SEO is all about. Search Engine Optimization is not about building a whole bunch of low quality "backlinks" from internal networks of blogs. In fact, those types of faked backlinks on spammy blogs can actually hurt your SEO rankings in the long term once Google catches wind of them. That's what many SEO companies sell, their ability to get you backlinks, at least, that is what several Denver SEO firms did with my clients. They would write phony blog posts with links back to our website on their own internal network of blogs and websites, and they wouldn't even show them to us as they were so poorly written! These same companies required year-long contracts with thousands of dollars to be spent by my clients every month. And to top it all off, they even threatened that if we stopped working with them, our sites would sink in the rankings. But I knew better. I knew that because I was helping my clients write and build new pages for different terms that they wanted to be found for, that their websites would only climb in the rankings if we kept doing what we were doing. Backlinks come naturally if you write good content, answering common questions and provide useful, relevant information. Then if you use social media, reach out to related businesses, press and organizations, and email and use word-of-mouth to share links to your content, your website will naturally get backlinks if people find your webpages useful. Share a great infographic, or answer client FAQs, give your top ten tips – all of these can be great, shareable, backlinkable content. And that is what I've been doing for my clients all along. I knew it was good for SEO, and optimized their pages. I used to subscribe to the theory that SEO Firms had some magic dust they were using to do their SEO work and backlink efforts – but after years of my clients spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, I realized they were scamming my clients. So, I began offering SEO Consultations and Optimization of my clients websites directly. And, over the years, I have really helped some clients soar to the top of Google for their services or products (search "Hatch chile seeds" and you'll find SandiaSeed.com, for example). I like to train my clients on how they can do their own SEO, and, for some who want writing or design help, I help them with their ongoing SEO. The important thing to know is that SEO isn't magic, anyone can do it! But you do have to keep your website updated and relevant, don't expect that a static website will do well for long in Google. Google likes to see original, fresh, good, relevant content! Infographic Design for SEO: I am also an Infographic Designer, and I love creating and illustrating infographics for my clients. Infographic designs are great for SEO as they're very shareable and can be useful. Infographics are a great way to quickly visualize ideas, concepts or statistics. Check out this recent Food Chain infographic I designed for SandiaSeed.com below: So if you are working with a SEO Company and backlinks are all that they're promising, and they're not building real content on your own website, then don't use them! SEO is about keeping your website optimized with fresh, relevant copy related to the keyword phrases and terms you want to be found for. There is no magic red button you can press to optimize your website for SEO once and be done with it. SEO is an ongoing, long-term process of researching what people are searching for relating to your business, and putting good information about those keyword phrases on optimized webpages. Watch the above video for some quick answers to some commonly asked questions about SEO. This was put on by Wix, so some of the questions pertain to the Wix platform, but all of these ideas apply to any type of website, whether you use Wordpress, Shopify, Wix, or other platforms – these same ideas apply across the board! • Wix Stores Shipping Options, explained

As a Wix Web Designer, I have a lot of clients using Wix Stores for their online stores. Beyond setting up products and the store pages, one of the main things that has to be setup as part of the online store is shipping. Wix Stores offers various Shipping options to choose from, including: Rate by Weight: lets you setup weight for your products, and then charge a flat rate based on the total weight of the calculated order. You can setup various weights and pricing so that heavier items have higher shipping costs. Free Shipping: allows you to offer free shipping across the board for all products. Flat Rate Shipping: allows you to setup various flat rates that can be applied to products, see below. Rate by Price: this Wix Stores Shipping Option allows you to setup flat rates based on the price of the order, see below: Store Pickup Only: this Wix Stores Shipping Option applies to all products in the store, so that people are only ordering for pickup, no shipping options given. Note: you can also add "Store Pickup" to any of the above options as well, so you can have both shipping options and pickup options if desired. You can setup the address for pickup. You can also rename the Pickup Title to be more specific (or even name it, "Delivery Cost TBD" for example, if you are selling odd sized products like furniture that are impossible to calculate shipping for). You can also add more details to give more information to your customer, such as “Call us to schedule Curbside Pickup at 555.555.5555” Wix Stores Taxes: Another thing online stores have to take into consideration for online stores is sales taxes. If you are selling products, then you need to at least collect sales tax for customers who share the same tax area (State, city, county) as your business. You can setup a flat rate for each state you have your business in (see first screenshot below), or, you can also use Avalara to calculate taxes based on zip codes for more accurate tax calculation. This is currently free on Wix – and is in beta – but I assume they will charge for this down the road. I have several clients using Avalara as it does do better tax calculation than just charging a flat percentage across the state. Avalara makes sure your tax is calculated based on up-to-date tax rules, and if you upgrade your plan it will provide detailed tax reports and assistance so you don’t have to calculate your store's taxes yourself. I put up this post to share with my clients who we are designing Wix online stores for – it's hard to explain all the options so here they are! Also to note, Wix also partners with Ecwid for shopping carts, which is a somewhat more complex tool for online shopping that has more options and customization features than the basic Wix Stores. Wix Stores is great for simple online stores without a lot of complex needs. Ecwid could be better for more sophisticated needs, and for some bigger online stores, a more custom solution is needed for advanced online shopping options – Shopify is a very complex and customizable platform for online stores. It doesn't have the beauty of the WYSIWYG page design tools that Wix has, but it is much more sophisticated for custom payment forms/gateways/shipping/taxes/etc. Here are a couple examples of Wix Stores in action: (these are also great small businesses to support!) lakeridgemaplefarm.com/store 144collection.com Not sure if Wix Stores is right for your online store? • Wix SEO Hero Questions

As a Wix Designer who specializes in Wix SEO, I recently was asked by Wix.com to do a Facebook SEO Q&A session for their customers. Here are some of my top answers that I wanted to share! SEO QUESTION: What are your top 5 tips for optimizing SEO? A: My top 5 tips for SEO is: 1. Optimize your page titles with unique titles for every page 2. Make sure to incorporate well-searched terms in your page titles and in content. 3. Add Content to your site as often as you can, answer common customer questions, become the expert in the topic you want to be found for. Pick a niche! 4. Add lots of unique images (use unique, alt text with a good keyword phrase) and video content (use YouTube and link to your site from every video). 5. Think long term – your SEO is never done, keep adding good new content to your website regularly. SEO QUESTION: How to make my website show up on the Google Map, and be in the top of the list in when people search for my organization? To get your organization found when people search for it by name can be accomplished by adding title tags, alt text tags, and content on your page that include your organization name. To get onto the Google Maps (is that what you meant by Sat?), you will need to setup and verify a Google Business account and setup your location so that you can be found by local searchers. SEO QUESTION: Could you share the differences between long-tail keywords vs short words in effective SEO? A: Long-tail keywords are longer search phrases, their length makes them more specific. Think "Where can I buy Hatch Chile Seeds" instead of just "seeds" or "hatch chile seeds". These are good to use to focus titles and content on pages, blog posts and/or products with long-tail keywords for more specific searches to get found. SEO QUESTION: How can I update my text, as even after updating my pages, there are old keywords appearing in google searches ( eg landscape painter rather than painter) ? A: Updated text will appear on Google once Google has re-crawled your website. To get Google to crawl your site more often, post new content to your blog, share links on social media, add a YouTube video and link it to your site. The more signals Google gets that link to your site, the more quickly they will re-index your new content. SEO QUESTION: I've done the wix seo stuff, but my website still does not show up on the top search results or even near it. Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. What do I need to do in addition to what I've already done? A: SEO is a long term, ongoing process. Completing the Wix SEO steps is just the beginning. To get to the top of search engines like Google, you have to keep building your website over time – focusing on creating new, in-depth content that is optimized for well-searched keyword search terms that you want to be found for. Depending on the competition for the terms you want to get found for, your website can take months to years to get to the top of Google, so be patient and diligent and keep adding more unique content, information, images and videos to your site. Use Social Media and other online forums to promote your content to help it get noticed by the search engines. SEO QUESTION: What programs/website would you recommend for keyword research? Is there a way to target a smaller area of a country for keyword research? In addition to the Wix SEO Wiz keyword research function, the tools below are ones I use in conjunction with each other to get first keyword ideas for SEO. I use AnswerThePublic.com to get ideas on keywords and phrases, and then use Google AdWords Keyword Planner tool to find out how many people are actually searching for those keyword phrase ideas. I also love Keywords Everywhere Google Chrome extension. Google AdWords Keyword Planner This is a great tool where you can insert your keywords, and Google will tell you how many people search that keyword per month, PLUS it makes recommendations of other keywords you could use (for example, if you think people are searching for "denver furniture" – but there are a lot more people searching for "denver furniture store". This is a great tool to figure out what to write about on your website. You can also choose the areas (cities, states, countries) that you want to see local searches vs. worldwide searches. Note: these days you do have to pay at least $1 a month to see the full stats. AnswerThePublic A fun long-tail keyword search tool so you can see what questions people are searching for around any keywords you specify. keywordseverywhere.com This is a easy and instant Chrome browser add-on tool that lets you quickly search the search volume of any keyword or keyword phrase. It now has a paid option where you can buy credits, but they're cheap and this really is a great easy tool to use right in Chrome as you browse. SEO QUESTION: I'm confused on SEO and keywords. I thought less is more...in terms or words. I've been told people like visuals and videos more so than reading. My biz is 100% visual. What do I do? Write a bunch of narrative and embed the keywords? A: Less is more applies to overall design and user interface. You want your site not to be overwhelming, and design it in a way that is visually appealing and easy to use for your customers, but also has in-depth information. SEO today is about having the most in-depth unique content about the topics you want to be found for. So while you can start out with a more simple design for the homepage and main pages, you can add the bulk of the SEO copy content and images lower down on the pages where you can go more in-depth, or in the form of blog posts and subpages. Think of it like a term paper, in the first paragraph you summarize your content, then you get more in-depth. So the top of your pages can summarize and visualize your content, then you can get users to read more by scrolling down the page or clicking to specific pages or blog posts with more in-depth info. Remember: the more unique content you have, and the more you add to the website, the better for SEO! SEO QUESTION: Where can one go to get help in finding the best optimizing keywords to gain the most exposure to a website and is it a good strategy to use uncommon words to stand out from websites that may not necessarily use the obvious words to rank high. A: Yes, finding a niche topic to write about is a great way to be able to get up to the top of search engines more quickly. Using uncommon words is fine IF they are being searched, as this can help you get found for terms that have less competition in the search world. I like to use Wix's SEO Wiz tool along with Google Ad's Keywords Everywhere to help figure out what terms people are actually searching for. Using long-tail keywords is your best bet for less common searched terms to help people find your site. SEO QUESTION: To what extent should SEO be applied? A: SEO should be applied to every page, and in all of your content. Add unique meta Page Titles, Descriptions and image alt-text, and include good keywords throughout the content on your site. Make sure to have a lot of in-depth information about the topics you want to be found for. SEO QUESTION: I have a lot of clients with fairly simple websites. They don't have a lot of deep content or blogs, and they don't really update frequently (or ever). But they all want to be "found" to improve their businesses. What are some things I can do to optimize their SEO so it aids in their success (find-ability, connecting with audiences, etc.) A: You should really encourage them to add a blog, or keep adding to pages and subpages or content to their existing pages over time. It is nearly impossible to rank high for popular search terms without building an in-depth website that is updated frequently. SEO QUESTION: What front-end tips or advice do you have for SEO? A: Add meta tags such as unique Page Titles and Descriptions for each page, add lots of in-depth content and unique images on your pages. Use image alt-text to describe each image with good keywords - keep each one unique and legitimately describe the image, and don't overdo it with keywords (avoid keyword stuffing). SEO QUESTION: What would be a successful SEO for an online music shop? A: Online music is a very general term and it would be hard to get to the top for, so you should find a niche – determine what type of online music you are selling, and focus on that niche. Determine what your selling: CDs, Records, or MP3s digital music, what type of music is it, who are your artists (you could focus on their names or albums or songs). If you're selling music that can be used for soundtracks, perhaps focus on those keyword search terms. Use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to figure out what people are searching for, and then start optimizing all your website pages with a variety of search terms that you want to be found for. SEO QUESTION: Ok so no webinar just questions.... We've created our website and our next challenge is SEO - we've done a few bits following the advice advice on WIX but are clueless of what we should be focussing on for maximum impact. Any advice for newbies please. A: For maximum SEO impact, make sure you're updating your website regularly and making to the most in-depth website out there for the keyword search topics you want to be found for. Make sure you're focusing on keyword terms that are actually being searched, use Keyword research tools such as Google Ad Keyword Tool to figure out the best terms to optimize your webpages for. Make sure each page has it's own unique page title and description (meta tags) to best describe the content on the page with relevant search terms. Also, be sure to use social media to share your new content and website links regularly. SEO QUESTION: Google is still not crawling our website enough, as compared to our content. Can you suggest some good practices? A: To help get more of your webpages on your website found and indexed by Google, keep adding fresh content to those pages, go as in-depth as you can with the content, add fresh images that have alt-text. Also, use Social Media to share and post links to all of your pages and blog posts, not just the homepage. SEO QUESTION: How can I find/hire a SEO expert who is Wix approved to help me with my site? I've submitted a request for someone through my dashboard weeks ago, but never received a response. A: You may want to submit the request again, I'm surprised you didn't get any responses, as typically several Wix Partners like myself will email you to followup on a request. Perhaps it didn't go through successfully, so I'd suggest to resubmit a request. SEO QUESTION: Planning to revamp a website completely, but mainly concerned about how redesigning impacts SEO ranking. Any tips on how to make sure your SEO stays or improves ranking while re-newing a website in its entirety? A: Keep adding new content to the old website as you rebuild the new site if possible. Also, continue to be active on social media with links back to your webpages. If you change page URLs in the redesign, make sure to setup 301 redirects to point search engines and users to the new coordinating page so you don't lose any SEO ranking. Just by launching an updated website with more new content can help boost SEO! Here is more info on setting 301 redirects up on Wix: https://support.wix.com/en/article/setting-up-301-redirects-from-one-url-to-another SEO QUESTION: Where is a good, solid guide for link building? Is it still the secret sauce for good SEO? A: There are tons of link building guides out there, but I'd say your best bet to improve your link building is to build good content for keyword phrases and terms that people are searching for. The links will come naturally if you're answering common questions or needs in an in-depth way that is useful to readers. Make sure to also use social media to post links to your website, subpages and blog posts, too, to get them out there. Finding like-minded local groups or partners, online forums and social media groups can also get your content in front of people so they will start naturally bookmarking and linking to your site over time. Don't fake links, or hire a SEO company to "build" 1000s of links to your site on hidden or private blog networks – these are usually scammy links and can actually hurt your SEO website in the long run. The best SEO is done on your website – build good content, and they will come. SEO QUESTION: Like everybody i want to improve my visibility and boost my website. SEO questions: 1. How important is the advanced SEO tool on each page (structured data and meta tags) and how does this work exactly. Can you give an exemple? 2. How important is the google sitemap and can you explain how this works? 3. What do you suggest to score better on SEO? Blog? Dynamic pages? 4. Suggestions for multilingual websites? Many thanks and looking forward to hearing from you. I do believe a webinar would be much more efficient to deal with our questions. A: 1. I don't use structured data too often, but meta tags (Page Title and Description) I use 100% of the time. Make sure each page has unique page titles and descriptions (meta tags) that describe the content on the page using keyword phrases that people are searching. 2. It is important to submit your website to Google Search Console along with your Sitemap to prompt Google to index your pages more quickly and thoroughly. Wix SEO Wiz has the ability to submit your Google, but you can also do it yourself by going to https://search.google.com/search-console/about and using Wix's Google Analytics tools to add the verification code. Also, don't forget Bing, they also have a similar setup so that you can submit your site and sitemap to them for indexing here: https://www.bing.com/toolbox/webmaster 3. Keeping your website updated regularly with content that is optimized for the keyword phrases you want to be found for is best for SEO. Whether you do this in the form of a blog, dynamic pages, or regular pages doesn't matter so much – it's just that you are adding good in-depth content to the site regularly. Blogs are great as they make it fast to write a post which creates a page that search engines can index quickly without the work of having to build a page manually. 4. Multilingual sites – Wix has a Multilingual function built in which allows you to build your website in different languages. Learn more at: https://support.wix.com/en/article/translating-your-site-with-wix-multilingual SEO QUESTION: How do I make my website be the first one to come up when someone Googles my business? A: To get your Business found when people search for it by name can be accomplished by adding title tags, alt text tags, and content on your page that include your business name. If you're a local business, you can also get onto the Google Maps by setting up and and verifying a Google Business account and setup your location so you appear on the map. Getting the top depends on how much competition there is regarding your business name – the more unique your business name, the easier it will be to get to the top. SEO QUESTION: I just started on a soccer board and took on the marketing piece. What are the top tricks and tips for SEO and website visibility? A: My top 5 tips for SEO are: 1. Optimize your page titles with unique Meta Page titles and Meta Descriptions for every page for the terms you want to be found for. 2. Make sure to incorporate well-searched terms in your page titles and in content. 3. Add Content to your site as often as you can, answer common customer questions, become the expert in the topic you want to be found for. Find a niche! 4. Add lots of unique images (use unique, alt text with a good keyword phrase) and video content (use YouTube and link to your site from every video). 5. Think long term – your SEO is never done, keep adding good new content to your website regularly. SEO QUESTION: How do SEO companies get so many backlinks? How can I get the same results doing it myself? A: I caution people about SEO companies, there are a lot of bad ones out there using shady practices to build links (such as internal networks of blogs where they write fake content and link to your site). If the SEO company is only promising backlinks, don't hire them. Good SEO companies know that the best way to build links is to build good content on your website for keyword phrases and terms that people are searching for. It helps to share it on social media and on other related blogs and forums. The links will come naturally if you're answering common questions or needs in an in-depth way that is useful to readers. The best SEO is done on your website – write unique, good content that answers common searches, and they will come. SEO QUESTION: If I have two pages, but the other page is only for a domain name and points to my main page. Do I need to complete SEO on the second page that just points to the main page? Can you elaborate on what you mean by pointing it? Is the second page have content, or are you just redirecting? For good SEO, I recommend that every page is optimized for SEO, and provides good content and is not just a link or forward to another page. SEO QUESTION: I am a property consultant, I want to catalogue my projects in my website. How can I want to set up some listing pattern so that I can add as many properties in a set format and I may edit the same as and when required. There are lots of ways to accomplish this through Wix, setting up Dynamic Pages would probably be your best bet. Q: How to add back links? A: Backlinks are simply other websites linking to your site. The best way to build backlinks is to build good content that covers topics that are being searched for that people want to share. Think about what your customers and audience would like to share: Infographics, top tips, answers to common questions, etc. Make sure to share your website page links in social media and on related websites or forums. Become the expert and backlinks will naturally come. SEO QUESTION: I just added an additional URL to my site and made it my primary. Will that effect my SEO? Yes, changing domain URLs can affect your SEO greatly. We don't typically recommend changing your domain unless it is absolutely necessary as search engines consider a new URL a new site, so your SEO process starts over – the new domain has to be indexed and will have to regain rankings over time. Keep your same URL if possible! SEO QUESTION: I make a living as a voice actress, I get most of my work via agencies around the world. I would also LOVE to have clients find and book me directly from my killer Wix website. I don't even know where to begin! Do any of you Wix Partners offer SEO skills for hire? I'm a successful performing artist, not a marketing genius. Yes, many of us Wix Partners like myself offer SEO services. While I don't work for Wix directly, I am a Website Designer and Graphic Designer and I love designing Wix websites for my clients. I also offer SEO Consultations and Trainings to help get your website found. It's great for SEO and is easy to use (with a little training, which I also offer if needed). Having multiple domains auto-forwarding or pointing to your site does not help with SEO. While it doesn't help, it could potentially hurt your SEO if you are using any domains that have had negative history associated with them (such as a domain of a formerly hacked blog site that was penalized by Google). On the other hand, having live websites with good content and ranking link to your site does help with SEO as those are considered backlinks. SEO QUESTION: Hi All, I've been writing pillar pages and Hubspot recommend using ungated content to build SEO can you explain how this works, clients often don't have enough resources of their own but want to be sure that this is a good risk to take. A: Ungated content allows visitors to access content such as your pages, blogs, infographics, videos, without having to login, fill out a form, subscribe or become a member. I ALWAYS recommend ungated content for SEO, hiding your content behind a signup form or have password protected content means that search engines can't find it or index it. So, if you are building good content and you want to be found, keep it easily accessible without any barriers for users and search engines. Will blogs help with boosting SEO? Writing good blog posts regularly can help with SEO. The important thing is that you are writing good, unique, and in-depth information in your blog posts that answers people's common questions or helps them with their needs. Think about your customer's top questions, and write answers to them. Use Google auto-suggested terms or Google Ads Keyword Tool to find out what people are actually searching for, and then write blog posts about it. Each blog post is a page that can really boost your SEO if you are writing good, shareable content.

  • Wix Blog Layouts

Wix Blog Question: “I'm just starting with Wix and am writing an individual blog post. I want to use the Wix editor tools like adding text boxes for columns and set up the images just the way I want using the Wix Editor tools that are available for the pages. I don't see how you can use the Editor tools for individual blog posts. Am I missing something?” Wix Designer Answer: No, you are not missing anything, the blog posts don’t have the same editing functionality as the pages so you can’t create columns or setup images in the same way. But you can use text wrapping tools for images to create the illusion of columns. I hope that Wix will add more functionality to the Wix blog posts down the road! If you want more control, create a page instead of a blog post so that you have the complete editor tools so that you can have more control over the design and setup text boxes, images, galleries, etc in the format desired.  Need expert help with your overall blog layout and design?
