- Is Wix good for vacation rentals?
Wix is a great platform for vacation rentals, hotels, inns and lodges – it can be integrated with third-party booking systems (AirBnB, VRBO, WebRez, etc) or Wix also has it's own built-in Hotels and Booking apps that allow your website to take bookings directly and skip the middle-man and their fees. You can also do both, have direct booking on your site, but also be on AirBnB, VRBO or other vacation rental platforms so that you get the best of both worlds, people will find you on those third-party platforms but they can also find you directly on Google and book with you directly. Wix Vacation Rental Websites can also be custom designed with beautiful full-width images of your location, rooms & scenery so vacationers can fall in love with your vacation rental and book their trip. Wix websites also look great on mobile and can be fully customized for the mobile user experience, which is essential as so many people use their phones to plan vacations these days! The best wix websites for travel services or rentals include full screen slideshows or photos that entice users to book! Here are some examples of Wix Vacation Rental Websites we've built, along with hotels: The Ruidoso River Resort website features scrolling effects to show off all the beautiful photos of their vacation rentals resort: Here's a scrolling view of the website when launched: Is Wix good for Hotels? My Wix Hotels Review: Wix is a great platform for hotels, lodges and inns. Wix can have beautiful imagery and galleries to show off your perfect vacation location and also help book your rooms. I find that the Wix Hotels app also works great for many hotels. If you can work within it's framework, it is an easy to use system. While sometimes compromises are needed to make it work for every unique need, but it is a nice simple platform that is easily built on Wix. Of course, if the Wix Hotels or Bookings apps aren't fullfilling the required needs for your hotel, you can still have a beautiful Wix website that can be integrated with third-party booking systems, either by embedding the booking widgets onto your website, or linking out to them. Wix can continue to be the platform for your website to beautifully show off all your amenities, location, faqs, things to do, event rooms, etc – and we can integrate any specialized booking engine for the booking calendar and payments. Here is an example of a Wix website built for the RiverWalk Inn: Here's a scroll tour of this Wix hotel website: We can integrate any booking system with your Wix website for your hotel, vacation rental or lodge, and the website can also feature interactive Google Maps of your location, full screen slideshows, videos, and so much more. Show off your hotel, inn, or vacation rental with a new Wix website! Mobile optimization is crucial for vacation rentals and hotels, as people use their phones for researching vacations. Wix websites allow for full customization of the mobile view so the site works perfectly on mobile for easy browsing and booking. Of course, it's also important to look good on laptops and desktops, and Wix can do it all. Wix is also great for travel agencies such as bluetailtravel.com shown above, plus lots of other vacation type services and busiensses because you can build a beautiful website that gets people excited about their next vacation. With full screen photos and galleries featuring vacation spots and vacation rentals, plus custom booking options, forms and features, Wix is the perfect website platform for vacation rentals and travel services. - Winter Sowing Guide
I illustrated this Winter Sowing Guide for a blog post I wrote for SandiaSeed.com, one of my favorite clients. This guide shows the various steps for winter sowing seeds. It's a great way to start seeds without any indoor space or heating, these Winter Sowing jugs work as mini-greenhouses and they help germinate seeds and keep seedlings warm until it's time to transplant in the spring. - Pickles
I just realized that the top searched term on my website is for PICKLES! I'm sure because of my website name, Picklewix.com, which was a nickname from my husband. He called me that because I love pickles, I grow and make my own pickles, and as a Website Designer, I love the Wix website platform. It was a fun name and it stuck, so when I decided to start a website dedicated to Wix Website Design, I thought it was perfect. But, since you all are looking for "pickles" in my search, here's my favorite pickle recipe (I like to make them extra spicy with lots of hot peppers from the garden): Jalapeño Pickles Recipe 10-20 Cucumbers (about 6 pounds) 6+ Jalapenos, sliced (or any hot peppers!) 6 cups (500 mL) white vinegar 6 cups (500 mL) water 5 tablespoons (25 mL) pickling salt 6 heads fresh dill or 8 teaspoons dill seeds (20 mL) 6+ small cloves garlic Several fresh leaves from Grape, Raspberry, Blackberry or Horseradish leaves (all of these leaves have natural tannins to help keep pickles crispy!) 6 - Quart-sized Jars, cleaned + lids and rings Combine vinegar, water, and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Bring your canning pot to a boil as well and disinfect the jars. Meanwhile, cut a thin slice from the ends of each cucumber. You can keep them whole or slice, or cut into spears. Remove hot jars from canner, then add sliced jalapeños, a couple garlic cloves, a grape/raspberry/blackberry/horseradish leaf*, and fresh dill to each jar (dill flower heads work great – select dill flower heads that have finished blooming and are setting seeds). Then add cucumbers and stuff as full as you can get while leaving a little room at the top of the jar. Pour boiling vinegar mixture over cucumbers to within 1/2 inch of the rim. Clean the lip of the jars with a damp cloth, place new lids on and screw on the rings, and return to the canner and boil/process for 10 minutes for pint jars or 15 minutes for quart jars (adjust time for altitude). Remove from water bath, let cool, and store for up to a year. Enjoy! *Crispier Pickle Tip: Using Grape/Raspberry/Blackberry/Horseradish leaves are good for crispier pickles because they have natural tannins to keep your pickles crispy. For even crispier dill pickles, soak the cucumbers in ice water bath for minimum of two hours (max 8 hours) before processing them. This will help them to always come out crispy, even if the cukes are harvested from the garden gradually over a period of 1-2 weeks and stored in fridge until there are enough to make a big batch of pickles. P.S. This pickle recipe is also posted on SandiaSeed.com, I help her with her seed company's website design, seed packet design, seed catalog design, enewsletter design, and write for her blog and SEO, plus create her social media posts and graphics. She is now one of my favorite clients! I grow tons of her seeds, too, which is how she became my client in the first place, she was looking for a new website and website designer and I ordered her Hatch Green Chile seeds on her old website... so voila, we've been working together ever since. Why do I like Wix for website design? Because it's the best platform in the business for ease of use, design abilities, SEO, and you don't have to worry about it getting hacked. I've worked in Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, Dreamweaver, Shopify, GoDaddy ... you name it. But I love Wix best, and so do my clients. While Wix may not the be the right fit for every business, it is perfect for 90% of my client's needs. I make platform recommendations based on the needs of the client - so reach out if you'd like a website design consultation and cost estimate. Want to see why I like Wix? - Best Website Builder in 2023
As an expert website designer with over 18 years of experience, the Best Website Builder in 2023 is Wix. Wix is an incredible WYSIWG editor (what you see is what you get) where you have precise creative control over your website design. You can move images, logos, and other elements around to any spot on the page – as well as build flexible, responsive page layouts that look good across all platforms. Wix is a True WYSIWYG Website Builder: What I love most about Wix is it's design capabilities. You can overlap logos or text over photos, there is no rigid "grid" that you have to adhere to as you'd find in many of the above mentioned website builders. - Author Website Designer
As a website designer, I've designed many websites for authors over the years. Here are a couple of my favorites: New York Times Bestselling author Harry MacLean, who lives in my neighborhood in Denver, needed a new website to go along with the launch of his new true crime book, Starkweather. His original website was over 10 years old and was not mobile-friendly or up-to-date with his new book's info, so we worked together to design a dynamic new author website to promote his new true crime book release as well as his other best selling true crime books. The website features full width backgrounds that highlight artwork from his book covers and images, and includes a blog for posting new reviews, book signing events, and other news. View more of author website examples below: Each book has it's own template that highlights artwork and reviews. The author website design template for each book's webpage is unique: Author websites should be easy to navigate and look good on phones, too. This author website design was created to look great across all devices, including mobile: Another local Colorado author I've worked with is Sandra Dallas. She is also a New York Times Bestselling Author, having written 18 adult novels, five middle-grade novels, and 10 nonfiction books. They are great page-turning novels set in the Western US with strong women lead characters. One of her latest books, Little Souls, takes place during the 1918 flu epidemic, which is an interesting read given the recent COVID pandemic. This website design features all of her books as well as reading group guides and her ongoing newsletter that she sends out quarterly to her readers. Of course, this author website design also was developed to work great on phones, since a big portion of her web traffic comes from mobile users: If you are an author or work with an author who wants to work with a reliable website designer for their new author website, reach out for a free author website design estimate.
- Types of Brochure Folds
While I do a lot of Website Design, I am also a Print Graphic Designer, and I design a lot of brochures, mailers, logos and other print materials for my clients. This brochure types diagram below shows a lot of different types of folds for brochures that I often share with my clients, so I thought I'd also share them here! One of the most common brochure sizes I design are tri-fold brochures that are printed on an 8.5x11 sheet and folded to a 3.66" wide by 8.5" tall brochure that has 6 panels. Half Fold Brochures are also popular, and can be printed on an 8.5x11" sheet and folded down to a 8.5" x 5.5" size, and has four total panels. We can also design mailing panels on brochures so they can be used for direct mail. I work with various printers for printing brochures. I often work with a local printer broker, Charlie McKay of Pearl Street Marketing in Denver for my local clients, but for clients outside of Denver I work with online printers. For Catalog Design printing such as for Seed Catalog designs, I really like using a printer based in Montana called printingcenterusa.com. I've also worked with uprinting.com for printing brochures - see their charts and sizes below for ideas on the standard sizes of brochures. Screenshots below of the different templates and info they provide:
- Trifold Brochure Templates
As a Graphic Designer, I design a lot of brochures, here is a great source from Uprinting, an online printer that has all types of different sized templates for easy downloading. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see all the templates, you can download them in various formats. uprinting.com/brochure-printing.html Screenshots below of the different templates and info they provide: Here is a diagram that shows the various types of brochure template folds:
- Wix Forms - how to validate a 9-digit number
I had a Wix Forms Question for a client, we wanted to validate that a form field has 9 numeral digits (for an account number) before submitting. She also had another field that she wanted just 5 digits allowed. I tried some pattern validation codes (like "^\d{9}$ " and the one shown above), but none of them worked. I scheduled a call and talked with Wix Phone Support and they said it wasn't possible. But they were wrong, it is possible! I figured out a hack workaround. You can choose Phone Number from the Type under your Text Input Settings for the field, and then choose Select Number Format and choose Custom, then put in the format desired. In this case my client wanted it in this format: ###-##-####, but you could do ####-#### or #-###### or whatever you want! Just because you choose Phone Number for the type, that doesn't mean it has to be a standard phone number format, and, you can name it anything you want in the field name/title for the backend submissions. This works perfectly. You can do this with any number, too, if you want to make sure it's a certain number of digits. Happy Wixing!
- Switch From Apple to Android Phone - Blocked Texts
Not getting all your texts after switching from an iPhone to a Google Pixel phone? The solution: deregister your number with Apple's iMessage here. Read on to learn more: I recently had an two-year-old Google Pixel phone with a great camera that went black unexpectedly while taking a picture. Google replaced it for free with a one year newer model. But, I did have to mail my old phone to them and wait for them to ship the replacement – so, in the meantime I used my husband's even older iPhone and just put my SIM card into it and switched it over on Verizon's side. I used the old iPhone for two weeks for texting and calls. Then, when my replacement Google Pixel phone arrived, I moved the SIM card into it and activated it with Verizon. All seemed to be fine, but, I found out that I was not getting all the texts people were sending me – I was getting SOME people's texts, but not all. I went into my local Verizon store and they swapped out my SIM card to see if that would fix it, but it didn't. That night I called Verizon's tech support and the guy thankfully knew the problem – he asked: "Are you only not receiving texts from iPhones?" – well, I didn't know for sure, but I knew that two of the people trying to contact me had iPhones and I wasn't getting their texts, so it was likely. He said that Apple iMessage was likely intercepting the iPhone texts to my number, and suggested I go to Apple's Deregister page to fill out the form here to have my number removed from iMessage: selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage Apple says that if you don't have access to your iPhone, you can deregister iMessage online. After you complete deregistration, your phone number is removed from iMessage services. So I went ahead and filled out Apple's Deregister Form and entered the confirmation code to "delist" my phone number from iMessage's world. If you switch to a non-Apple phone and you are not getting SMS/MMS messages, you likely need to deregister iMessage. It's true, I didn't realize this, but Apple iMessage basically hijacks text messages sent from iPhones so they never come through to the Android or other non-iPhones once your phone number is in their system. Your phone number gets into the iMessage system by simply putting a SIM card from a non-iPhone into an iPhone. Be patient: According to Apple, after deregistering your number, you should be able to receive text messages right away but it might take a few hours for some Apple devices to recognize that you're not using iMessage when they send you a message. In my case, it did take a few hours before I was able to have a friend test it and receive the text message. I did NOT receive any of the texts that people had sent to my new Google Pixel phone prior to deregistering my number with iMessage though, so those texts were lost to the matrix unless I wanted to retrieve them on the old iPhone (I didn't).
- Disable Wix Phone Verification
Question: I currently take care of our business Wix site and I do this for the owner. When I sign on to our wix.com acount, it sends the Wix verification code to my phone number. Sometimes the owner works on it or has another person work on it at times I am not available so no one can get in because the code goes to my phone. Is there a way to add another number? Answer: I don’t believe you can add another phone number for verification on Wix. But you have a few options to fix this Wix verification issue: Option One: You can “disable” the phone verification in your settings here, scroll down to see the verification area and look for a “disable” button: https://manage.wix.com/account/account-settings Option Two: What you can also do is add another Collaborator to your Wix website, that way they can login through their own login. It is frustrating that Wix added the phone verification, as it makes it hard for more than one person to login. If the new Collaborator email login does not add phone verification to their account, it won’t be as hard to use that login for others as no phone verification will be needed to use that login. Unfortunately Wix prompts for it nearly every time you login, so it’s easy to set it up not realizing you don’t want it! ignore the prompts. Here’s how to add a collaborator to a Wix website » See screenshot below, adding Collaborators for your Wix website is found under Settings > Roles & Permissions As a Wix Website Designer, I get a lot of questions from clients about Wix. When I answer these questions, I often add them to this Wix Designer Blog so that others can quickly find answers to common Wix questions, too. - Blue Host - Domain Forwarding
I have a client who I designed a Wix website to replace their hacked Wordpress website, and they have BlueHost.com as their domain registrar. We wanted to forward/point two of one of their domains to a subpage of their new main website (example: www.mainwebsite.com/subpage). Their domain forwarding (Blue Host calls it Redirects) is a bit hard to find, so I wrote this blog post for my future reference and to help others with finding it as well! Click on Hosting in the left hand menu of the Blue Host account dashboard. Then scroll down to find the Quick Links box on the lower right, and click on CPANEL. Then, in the CPanel, scroll down to the Domains section and click on Redirects. This is where you can add domain forwards to have a domain redirected to a different URL. See images below for reference for what you're looking for. NOTE: You DO need to have a Blue Host Hosting plan to setup domain forwarding. Blue Host does not currently offer domain forwarding with only domain registration. Other hosting/domain platforms such as GoDaddy include forwarding free as part of the domain registration cost, so that is one downside to having Blue Host as a domain registrar but not a hosting provider. Wix Request: Directing Domains or Subdomains to Specific Pages on my Wix Site Also to note: We could transfer the domains from Blue Host to Wix, since they no longer are using the Blue Host Wordpress hosting for their site, HOWEVER, unfortunately Wix does not offer the ability to forward a domain to a subpage of a domain (example: www.mainwebsite.com/subpage) - you can only point the domain to the main domain. I'm not sure why Wix doesn't offer this yet, but they do have it on their feature request list, so vote for it if you want the ability to forward/redirect domains registered at Wix to a subpage of a website. Vote here: https://support.wix.com/en/article/request-directing-domains-or-subdomains-to-specific-pages-on-my-wix-site Happy Wixing!
- How to add Collaborators on Wix Websites
Wondering how to share a Wix website with someone to edit? You can find Wix Roles and Permissions in the Settings on the Wix Dashboard on the lower left. Or, you can click on the three dots icon in the upper right and choose "Add Collaborators" to add an email to become a collaborator. Wix Roles and Permissions - getting Collaborator Invite Link: If for some reason your collaborator's email is NOT receiving the invite from Wix to become a collaborator, you can also go to the Roles and Permissions area in the Settings and click on the three dots icon next to the collaborator you have already invited and choose "Get Invite Link" in order to email them the link directly. Sometimes, these collaborator emails don't get received, so this is a good workaround.
- Wix Image Downloader
Wondering how to find or download any image used on a Wix website? Whether you just want to use it again in a different place or perhaps you want to download or edit the image, here's how you can do it: Using the Photo Studio in Wix to edit an image is an easy way to locate and download any image used on your Wix website. Watch the video above to see how this works. Wix Image Downloader: Use Wix's Photo Studio (shown above) to edit and save images on your Wix website so that you can locate them in your Site Files. The great thing about saving a new slightly edited version of your image is that now you can see the original file , since Wix saves a new file of any image you edit with the same filename with "_edited" at the end of the new filename. I hope that Wix developers will make it possible to view the existing image used in the editor soon, but until then, this is a handy workaround to locate and be able to download images used on a Wix website. Wix - Download site files: While you can't download a Wix website as HTML to use on other servers – since it's a hosted platform the code would not just work on other third-party hosting servers without the Wix hosting platform backend – but you CAN download your image and logo files or copy text from your Wix website to put on another platform or use as desired. If you want to download the website's images, you can go into the Site Files in the Wix Media Library whenever you need to. You can also select multiple images in the Wix Site Files folder and click on the "Download" option on the right-hand side of the screen, see below: Wix Media Manager: To figure out where an image you want to download from Wix is located, Wix doesn't make it easy to locate the existing image, and sometimes the image may not even be in your site files if it was an UnSplash or free Media from Wix, so view the above video that shows you how to edit a used image on any page so that you can then see the filename and download the edited image if desired. Wix Image Downloader App: Although I have not used it so I can't claim that it works, there is a Chrome extension app called the "Wix Image Downloader" that allows you to download the image. There are also other Chrome apps such as the "Image Downloader" Chrome extension app that allow for downloading images from any website. However, if you have access to the Wix website, you can do the same thing in the Wix Site Files library and select and download all the images in the Site Files if desired, this would also include unused images on the Wix website that are not being currently used on the site but at some point were uploaded to the Site Files of the Wix website. Of course, DO NOT download images from any Wix website or any website for that matter that you do not own or have permission to download or use. Many images are protected by copyright and cannot be used without permission.
- Top Wix Tips
As an expert Wix Designer, I love to share tips! Here are my top Wix tips for some great (but somewhat hidden) tools in Wix to make your Wix Website Design come along easier: In this video above I show you (more than) three of my favorite tools in Wix. These helpful Wix tools that I use all the time that are kind of hidden, but will come in very handy for other designers and people using Wix. Top Wix Tip #1: Y Coordinates on Toolbar If you have a very long page that scrolls down for some distance, when you duplicate (Command-D on Mac) an item or a strip or a section, Wix will put it into the next available spot, way down near the bottom of the page. But that's not where you want it, you want right underneath the item you duplicated. This is when Y Coordinates on the Toolbar are very helpful. So if I want to find out where I want to place something, you can look at the Y coordinate number on the toolbar that will show you where the item is in the vertical placement of the page. You can determine the Y coordinates based on existing items, and then use that same Y Coordinate on the new element to pull it up to the spot on the page desired. This way you don't have to click and drag, and scroll up and up and up to get something to the top of the page. This is a really good Wix tool, the Y coordinates on your toolbar. It is very handy to have because you can move things very quickly up to the top of the page or in the middle of the page, depending on where you are. You can always manually move it into the exact spot on the page once you get it in the general vicinity. Top Wix Tip #2: Width & Height on Toolbar Another really great tool in Wix on this same toolbar is the width and the height tool. Often times I create multiple text boxes or elements so that I can break them into columns. Having separate text boxes also helps with mobile view because we can move them around and have more control of them if all in one text box. like the headline separate from the subhead separate from these paragraphs. But sometimes you create multiple elements and you might get your boxes misaligned or they're not the same size or width. You can view all of that info in the Width (W) and Height (H) fields on the Toolbar. You can check their their Y coordinate placement to make sure that they're at the same level. Another great Width & Height coordinates use is if you have several text boxes, images or elements that you want them to be all the same size. Well, you can click on the Width or Height field to highlight the number, then if you click on another item it will automatically resize it to the same width you had selected on the previous item. This comes in handy to quickly size multiple objects consistently. Top Wix Tip #3: Wix Image Editor / Photo Studio Another hidden feature of Wix that I really love too is the the Photo Studio editor tool. If I click on any image I can access this editor by clicking on the "Edit Image" tool. One great feature of the editor is the cut out tool. For example, if a logo has a white box around it because it's a JPEG and I don't want to have that white box, I can use the Cut Out tool to quickly remove the white background so it is transparent. You can also modify the cut out transparency if desired. Dont' worry, once you save the new image it does NOT replace your current image, so you'll have both to work with going forward. With the cut out transparent PNG images in the Wix Media Library, it may be hard to see if it's transparent until you put it on the page. Wix does show a light blue background on transparent parts of images in the library, to imply that it's transparent, but it's a bit hard to see until you place it on the page. Top Wix Tip #4: Using the Wix Studio Editor to relocate & access images Another great reason to resize or edit images is if you're using an image on the page but you have hundreds of images in your media library and you cannot find the one you're using – but you want to edit it or reuse it somewhere. One downside to Wix is that if I click here on change image, it doesn't show me what image I'm using currently. And, if I don't have my images filenames with something I can easily search, it can be very difficult to find the image. Even worse, if you are using free images from Unsplash or Media from Wix, they're not even in your site files to find! To get them into your site files area of the library, by simply editing them you can get that image into the top of your media library so you can find it and reuse it in a new spot or edit it. So sometimes I will click on "Edit Image" so that I can make just a very subtle adjustment to it or I can crop it just one pixel for example, or brighten it a bit, and then save it. When I click on save, this will create a new version of that image and put it into the top of my media library. So now I can find it and now I can name it and all that. Again, this is a good time to rename your image to be whatever you want it to be. And you can also use the Wix Image Editor for a lot of other tools such as cropping, or you can use a filter to run an effect on it. They have some pretty nice filters, and there's also some Photoshop-like sliders that allow you to increase contrast and do different effects with the image. You can choose a black and white high contrast newspaper look with the filters, for example. Or there is the "Auto Enhance" tool that works like AI where it, it evaluates the picture and decides how best to improve it, This sometimes improves it, sometimes not, but it's worth it to check it out. Top Wix Tip #5: Color Overlays on Background or Strip Photos Want to do a color overlay on a background image? You can click on Settings on strip or section/page backgrounds and then use a background color and the image transparency sliders to apply a nice color overlay (or underlay) on any background images. There you have it! Now you know about some of my favorite hidden tools and tips in Wix. For more Wix tips, check out my Wix Designer Blog » Happy Wixing!
- Wix Website Subscribe Forms - Double Opt-in
If you are having trouble finding the Double Opt-In settings for an older Wix website subscribe form, it may be because the older form doesn't have these settings available! After some time trying to figure out why my form didn't have a double-opt-in feature or the ability to add forms, I reached out to Wix support and they helped me figure out that it was missing due to it being an older form. I added a new subscribe form and that allowed me to view Form Settings, Add New Fields, and setup opt-in settings. See the video below to see what I mean: Happy Wixing! Need help from a Wix Designer? - Quicktime Screen Recording: How to Stop Recording
If you have a Mac, Quicktime is built in and is a great way to create screen recordings to do tutorials. I use this recording feature often to make Wix Tutorials for my clients. One thing I've noticed has been an issue for people is figuring out how to Stop the Quicktime Screen Recording when done. This is because the "Stop" button is not very obvious and it's in the "greyed" out area of your screen. Here's how to Stop the Quicktime Screen Recording, see step 4 below along with the third screenshot to unravel the mystery: Srio Screen Recording with QuickTime (for Macs) With QuickTime Player open, go to File > New Screen Recording. A Screen Recording prompt will appear ... highlighting the area of the screen to record When you are ready, click the Record button. ... When you are ready to Stop the Screen recording, in the top menu bar, click on the Stop Icon. (circle with square, in the top upper right of screen to the left of the Date/time - see third screenshot below to see this, it's a bit hard to spot as it is in the greyed out area outside of your recorded video area) Select Screen Area & Record: Select the part of the screen where you want to record, and then click on the "Record" in the small Quicktime panel: To Stop the Quicktime Screen Recording They recently changed where to "stop" the recording in Quicktime, instead of a button panel, now you will need to look for the "Stop" icon in your top file menu in the upper right. It will be to the left of your Time/Date and Wifi/other icons, and it looks like a circle with a square in it. Click on it and then Quicktime will popup the screen video you just took, save as desired. I like to do a small test first, and talk and record a few seconds to make sure my microphone is working before doing full tutorial videos. - Graphic Designer Tip: How to fix image resolution in InDesign
Learn how to find and fix image resolution in InDesign using the Preflight tool: If you're preparing a file for print, such as a seed catalog, shown here in this video, there is a handy tool that allows you to find any low resolution images in your document before preparing the file for print. It is important that your images have an effective resolution of 300dpi if you are printing files for fliers, catalogs, brochures, etc. If your effective resolution is lower than 300 dpi, the images won't be as crisp (and they could appear pixelated) in the print-version. One thing to note: it's best to find the original images at higher resolution and replace the low resolution images, rather than "fixing" the images by scaling them up in Photoshop, which can still result in blurrier images. Effective resolution is more important than actual resolution, as that shows the resolution of the image at the size it is being used in the document. Here is how you can quickly identify low resolution images in your InDesign documents using the Output > Preflight tool window. Watch the video below to see where to find this handy tool and how to use it: Happy designing! - Wix Designer Tip: How to delete pages in Wix
Having problems deleting pages in Wix? If you choose a template that has extra pages or apps that you don't need, there is a way to remove them. Here's how you can remove extra pages, specifically apps such as the Bookings or Member pages, and chat boxes from your Wix website: On some pages, the Delete button in your Site Menu is greyed out, that means that the page is associated with an app, and you have to delete the app pages separately, see the video above to see where this is done. Regular pages can be deleted easily in the Site Menu by clicking on the three dots icon and selecting "Delete." Want some help with your Wix Website Design? - Drop Down Menus in Wix - Having issues?
Wix Page Menu Issues: As a Wix Website Designer, I sometimes run into bugs in Wix, and so I share fixes for them here in this blog. I recently had a client that asked me to update some of the pages on his Wix website, and I was running into issues with not being able to reorder the pages in his menu, they were "stuck" as sub-sub-pages, which was odd as we did not use a sub-sub-menu! I couldn't figure out how to make them a Main Page again, and they wouldn't drag and drop into the structure I wanted. Frustrating! I reached out to Wix support and they were able to help me figure out how to fix it – it seems the pages were "corrupted" in the menu structure, so the only way to fix them was to copy the pages and create new pages – this was a bit cumbersome, but DID fix the problem! Duplicating the pages didn't work, but using the "Copy" and "Paste" in the menu worked. See the issue I was having in this video (this was before I was able to fix it), see the fix lower below: Here are the copy and paste instructions from Wix for creating new pages to cure bugs on Wix pages: Hello, Idelle, Thank you for reaching out to Wix Customer Care about moving Reviews page from sub-sub page level. We greatly appreciate your patience as you awaited our reply. My pleasure to assist. I completely understand that when something isn't working for you, it may be frustrating and challenging, since you give so much time and effort to make your site perfect. Thank you for sharing your concerns with us. Upon checking the site, I can see that Reviews are under Services - Pollination - Reviews. With menu set as Horizontal menu, which has 2 levels: This means that at some point the menu may have been set up differently, to allow 3 levels: In order to resolve the issue, you may do the following: 1. Copy page 2. Create new one on the main level (For example, Review-1) 3. Paste the page to the new page 4. Remove the old one and rename the new one. See screenshot to see where to Copy a Wix page: And here's a video to better show how to copy and paste a page in Wix (rather than duplicate it which doesn't always solve bugs such as this): To copy and paste a page: Click Menus & Pages on the left side of the Editor. Right-click the relevant page and click Copy. Open the Editor of the site you want to paste to. Paste the page by doing one of the following: Right-click anywhere on the screen and select Paste. Right-click anywhere on the screen and select Paste & Apply Site Theme to apply the color and text themes on the target site. 5. (In the Pages panel) Rename the new page: Enter the new page name. Click Done You can also use keyboard shortcuts to paste the new page on the target site: Paste: Ctrl+V or Cmd+V on a Mac. Paste while applying the site's theme: Ctrl+Shift+V or Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac. Or, as an alternative, you may restore the way the menu functioned previously (if you are aware of how it had been done). Wishing You a Wonderful Day! Kind regards, Hanna | Wix Customer Care

- Best Websites in the World
Not sure if these are the BEST website in the world, but they are certainly the most widely used. It is interesting to see what the top ranking websites are – Google is #1 in the world (no surprise, as it's one of the best search engines I've used) and Google is also number 2 with YouTube, Facebook third and Instagram fourth. This is a screenshot from July 18,2023. I wonder how these will change in the future, time will tell! Of course there are some adult choices on here too! - No Idling
Engine idling not only pollutes, it also wastes gas and money. Many people don't realize how much pollution and wasted gas caused by idling their car. If you have a car, simply turning off your engine will save money and the air we breathe. Here are a few graphics to spread the word and help save our air. Idling wastes fuel & money. All Idling vehicles get ZERO miles-per-gallon while idling. Trucks and other large vehicles also tend to waste more fuel than smaller vehicles. Idling also can cause more engine wear-and-tear over time, resulting in higher maintenance costs. Idling burns up oil – the longer you leave your engine idling causes more motor oil to be circulated and burned up. So in addition to cutting back on air pollution, not idling your car also saves your engine, time and money. Here's a video to show fuel waste from idling cars: Want a custom No Idling sign designed for your business, school or neighborhood? Reach out »
- Will AI replace designers?
It is my belief that AI is a tool that designers can use. Is it a full solution? Will it replace website designers? No. AI will aid and enhance the work of creatives, rather than replace them. Afterall, To replace creatives with AI, humans will need to accurately describe what they really want. We’re safe. 😂. Wix, Shutterstock, Adobe and other creative tools are starting to use AI in their products. I've dabbled with some of these tools, and they are far from perfect. It's a starting point, but not a final solution. I believe that good designers can use AI to assist in design, but is it the end-all solution? Nope, humans are irreplaceable when it comes to original ideas and design. So am I worried about AI? Nope. I do hope the AI tools get better with time and training, I'd love some assistance to make things faster. One "AI" function I already love in Wix is their Photo Editor's clip-out tool – it really works pretty well and quickly, too, much faster than Photoshop. I still haven't found a perfect way to clip things out in Photoshop with a click on of an "AI" or otherwise button. I usually have to use a combination of tools to get the clipping path looking it's best on objects. We'll see what time-saving tools AI will be bringing us, I'm sure it will improve. Though I can't say the smart phone's auto-correct "AI" is working very well yet. At all. haha! Can't beat humans. Yet. - Infographic Design: Idling Car Pollution
Save our Air: Idling cars create air pollution: As a local Denver Website Designer and Graphic Designer, sometimes I like to use my skills to help educate people to help change their habits for the better. Here’s an infographic I designed as a starting point to use to share with my friends and family on social media on why it's bad to let your car idle/run while you are parked, even if for just a short period of time. For more idling car facts, check out the the www.enginesoff.com website. Is very informative and explains away common myths that idling vehicles don’t pollute much or that cars need to idle for long periods of time to warm up. Idling is one of my biggest pet peeves when I ride my bicycle around town – people who pull over and look at their phones for long periods of time while their car is running. You can smell the fumes as you ride by, and as we all know, people don’t have any idea how much time passes while they’re surfing on their devices. I designed this quick infographic to spread the word. Here is a sheet from Engines Off Colorado that talks about City of Denver's Idling Restriction, to download a PDF, click on the image below: How bad is car idling for the environment? Idling vehicles release harmful chemicals, gases and particle pollution into the air, contributing to ozone, regional haze, and global climate change. It does make a difference, please turn off your car when parked! Source: https://deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/air-quality/motor-vehicles-air-quality/idle-reduction/why-idling-harmful Do idling cars produce more pollution? Yes! An idling engine can produce up to twice as many exhaust emissions as an engine in motion. Idling reduces your vehicle's fuel economy, costs you money, and creates pollution. Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel and produces more emissions that contribute to smog and climate change than stopping and restarting your engine does. - Round Sticker Printer - Small Sizes
Looking for tiny .5" stickers? As a sticker designer, I was struggling to find a printer that would print extra small round stickers at half an inch of size. Stickermule, Sticker Giant, and many other printers don't print that small. So if you're looking for a printer who specializes in small round stickers that are just half an inch in size, websticker.com is your place to order! They do stickers as small as .5 inches so you can print tiny stickers for your next project. The only thing is, make sure your design works well at a tiny size, as half an inch IS tiny! I designed these 15th year anniversary stickers for one of my favorite clients, sandiaseed.com, to put on their seed packet designs to cover up an old badge. I kept the design very simple as it needs to be legible at that small sticker size. As a Graphic Designer, I love to share resources that fill my hard-to-find needs such as printers and other design tools. My client actually discovered Websticker, I had not heard of them before! Find their small round sticker prices at: websticker.com/product/custom-round-labels/ Here are some of their round sticker sizes to give you an idea of the range of sizes, they offer every size from .5" tiny round stickers up to 4.5" round stickers. - How Much Do Wix Designers Charge
Wix Designers' pricing can vary, depending on website design experience and location. My complete Wix website design project rates typically range from $1200-$3000+ (includes 16-40+ hours) depending on the needs. I also charge $75/hour for design for smaller projects on an hourly basis if needed. The total cost depends on many things, including how many pages are needed to be designed, if ecommerce online shopping, custom forms, booking functionality or other customization is needed. Another big part of what some Wix Designers offer is SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which means that they are optimizing your page titles, descriptions, and content to perform well for being found on Google and other search engines. Many Wix Designers use Wix templates, but I offer a custom design of Wix Websites so your website will be completely unique to your business. - New Wix Pricing - June 2023
As with everyone else, Wix is increasing they're hosting pricing. Here's a chart to help determine which plan is best for the needs. Where storage and video hours seemed to be unlimited or had much higher limits before, you now have to upgrade if you want more storage. Of course with Wix, it's good to stay tuned to see if they have sales, they usually offer 50% off plans every few weeks, which is a great time to buy hosting, especially if you purchase multiple years and get an even better deal. I still think Wix has one of the best WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors around, and I highly recommend the platform. It's a little more expensive than it was, but you are still getting their million-dollar website editor for a decent price. I do like that they've simplified their fee structure, it was pretty confusing before, so this makes it easier to see quickly what plan will work for my clients. I do with they had more than 2GB storage in the base light plan, as Wix is now enforcing it – so it's important to compress your extra-large images and/or videos to not use up the 2GB of space too quickly. Images don't really need to be any larger than 1980 pixels wide, which typically keeps them under 1mb if saved as a jpg, so I will optimize images going forward so they aren't over 1mb each so the 2GB will be plenty of room for all the images. If you have large video and are limited by Wix's newly enforced storage restrictions, you can also upload them to YouTube or Vimeo and use them to embed anywhere on your Wix site. This will save a lot of space, since video files tend to be very large. Need a Wix Website Designer? Reach out for a free estimate and website review » Happy Wixing!

Is it unprofessional to use Wix? No, Wix websites are used by professional businesses across the globe with great success. While Wix is marketed as a DYI website builder, the platform is very robust, and, when custom-built professionally, Wix websites look beautiful, are mobile friendly & easy-to-edit, plus they excel at SEO (search engine optimization) so that your site can be found. So don't worry, Wix is a professional website platform to use for any sized business or organization. View some of the Best Professional Wix Websites » Wix is a professional website platform that is used by businesses both large and small, as well as non-profits, organizations and individuals around the world. The Wix editor is amazing, it's a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) design tool that is the only truly drag-and-drop website editor we've found, so far, that is. As professional Wix Website Designers, we do work on other platforms, but we find that Wix is the best option for most of our clients. Professional Wix Websites While Wix can be used by beginners to create their own websites, if you want a professional Wix website and you're not a website designer, we recommend that you hire a website designer to develop the Wix website initially. Professional Wix website designers know the platform and it's tools inside and out, and can make sure your website design looks good across all devices, is easy to use and user-friendly, SEO and ADA optimized, and is fully tested and polished. Poorly designed Wix websites can load slowly, miss the mark on SEO, look bad on different sized devices, or not be user-friendly. So, having your Wix website professionally designed is a great first step in having a beautiful and successful Wix website. Once built, Wix websites are often edited and maintained by business-owners, as the platform really does make it easy to update and add pages, blog posts, and images to your website over time. We like to offer Wix training to all of our clients so they can update their own Wix websites once professionally designed. Some clients come back to us for design refreshes or to add and design new pages or features, but typically they can do all the day-to-day updates on their own, which is vital to keeping professional websites fresh and current. Do professional designers use Wix? Yes, professional website designers use Wix all the time. In fact, there is a large, growing community of website designers who have fallen in love with Wix as it is such a great platform for professional designers. We are website design professionals, and have been in the business for over 18 years and have used every platform under the web sun, and in 2022 and going into 2023, we believe that Wix is one of the best platforms out there. It excels in design functionality, offers ease-of-use to our clients, and it performs very well with SEO so that our client websites can be found in search engines. While we still work in other platforms such as Wordpress and Shopify, we still find that Wix is the best fit for most of clients needs, simply due to the flexibility, ease-of-use and maintenance-free features of the platform. We love it, and our clients love it. Wix Business Website We use Wix to build a majority of our client's websites because it is the perfect platform that can be custom designed and built for each business' needs, is easy-to-edit, excels at SEO, includes built-in galleries, slideshows, booking services, ecommerce, reservations, menus, membership plans, custom forms, and has many other features to meet business needs. Easy to Update Business Websites that are Maintenance-Free With a little training, the Wix website editor is very easy to use, so businesses actually aren't afraid to keep their own websites updated over time, which is great for business and SEO. My clients love their Wix websites as they can easily add or update their websites' content anytime, and as often as they'd like. Since they don't have to worry about security updates or maintenance or "breaking" their website, as Wix hosting support takes care of all of this, clients can focus on simply keeping their websites fresh and filled with the most up-to-date news, products, services, and content. Non-Profits use Wix websites to help recruit members and volunteers, as well as raise funds with donation forms and announce upcoming events and fundraisers. Restaurants use Wix websites to help get found on Google maps, get reviews, and allow their customers to access their menus, online ordering, reservations, location maps and learn about upcoming events like Trivia Nights or Daily Specials and other news. Businesses like this Wisconsin mushroom farm use Wix to sell their produce online as well as arrange for pickups at local farmers markets and for CSAs. Check out more of the Best Wix Websites we've worked on to see the full range of what Wix websites can look like. With Wix, you're not stuck to a cookie-cutter template, you can edit every aspect of your page. When designing websites in Wix, we custom design each site so that each professional Wix website is unique and customized to the client's needs. Businesses typically hire a Wix Designer to help build out the site so it is built correctly to be fully responsive to look good on desktop computers, tablets and phones, and is correctly optimized for SEO and ADA compliance. But once it's built, most professional businesses are able to keep their website updated over time. Is Wix good at SEO? Yes, Wix is very good at SEO, and is a professional website platform to use to get to the top of search engines. We've competed Wix websites with Wordpress and other platforms and it performs equally well when optimized correctly and updated often. SEO is more about how you USE your website to keep it updated, add blog posts or news, add recipes, sales, events, services, tips.... anything related to your profession so that you can become the expert in your field. Wix helps you do that, and has all of the SEO tools needed to get to the top of google for competitive search terms. Years ago, Wix used to have more limitations in the SEO features, especially over 10 years ago when it was Flash based, so it used to have a poor reputation for SEO, but many years ago Wix added all of the SEO tools that are needed to excel in search engines. Google has even acknowledged that Wix websites perform well with SEO if used correctly. John Mueller of Google recently said about Wix SEO: “Wix is fine for SEO. A few years back it was pretty bad in terms of SEO, but they’ve made fantastic progress, and are now a fine platform for businesses. The reputation from back then lingers on, but don’t be swayed by it. What they’ve done in recent years is really good stuff, including making it trivial to have a really fast site (as you see in the Lighthouse scores — admittedly, speed is only a tiny part of SEO). If Wix works for them, and they don’t need more, there’s no reason to switch.” Here's another quote from Mueller from awhile back: WIX websites work fine in search. There are a lot of different setups for new websites. I wouldn't focus too much on a single provider, but rather think about the bigger picture: which will make it easiest for you to maintain your site (adding / changing content)? If you're getting help from others for your site, is there one that they have experience in, which might make it easier / cheaper? Which one offers the features that you think you'll need in the mid-term? There are probably a few options that could work for you, so maybe it makes sense to just try some of them out and see which one works best for you -- websites are websites for Google. So basically, it's not about the platform, it's how you use it. And if Wix makes it super easy to edit and update your site, that means it's great for SEO! Adding good content is what SEO is all about - keeping your site fresh and packed with relevant information and continuing to add it over time – this will help you rise to the top of searches you're targeting content for. Stale websites sink in search engines, so making sure that your website is easy to edit and use is of the utmost importance. If it's easy to edit, businesses and professionals are much more likely to keep their website pages updated, which is essential for SEO. Wix Pros and Cons Wix Pros: Wix is a professional website platform that is easy to edit, can be completely custom designed, has tons of added features including blogs, reservations, online stores, forums, slideshows, galleries, dynamic pages, and so much more. Wix Cons: Wix isn't necessarily the best fit for every business, if you have super highly customized ecommerce or membership needs, you may be better using other platforms such as Shopify which is highly specialized in ecommerce. However, for the majority of our client's needs, we find that Wix works perfectly, even for many custom shopping cart needs. Wix offers their Wix Stores solution which is super easy to use but a little more basic (good for many stores with basic online store needs), while Ecwid is a third party ecommerce system that seamlessly works in Wix that can be highly customized to most client's complex online store needs. We will review the client's needs, and then make recommendations on what the best platform is for their specific needs. So regarding Wix's Pros and Cons, the pros usually outweigh the cons, making Wix a great choice for most professional websites. Advantages of Wix Easy to use: The Wix editor is the easiest editor in the business, you edit the website as you see it, no need to switch back and forth between a backend and the actual site, when you edit Wix websites, you just navigate your website and click on the items you want to add to or update. No security or plugin updates needed - unlike Wordpress, and other platforms, you don't have to worry about your website software or plugins getting outdated and becoming a security risk. Wix is a hosted solution and their hosting team handles all of the backend security, so you can just focus your time on simply adding and updating your website content to keep it fresh and current. Less Expensive to Develop: Because Wix requires no template programming or backend/security updates, Wix can be a lot more cost-effective to have a professional website designer develop than other platforms. Programming "templates" on other platforms can take many hours, so Wordpress, Squarespace, Shopify and other platforms often cost a lot more to customize than Wix. Easy to update the Design anytime: You're not tied to a template in Wix, you can custom design each and every page on your site exactly how you like it. Designing pages in Wix is more like designing in professional design tools like Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. It's easy to change the background color, change fonts, swap out slideshows, add text or galleries, social media feeds, new images or graphics, etc. With professional Wix websites, you're not tied to a developed "template" so it makes it easier to adapt your business website over time to reflect your current branding and look and feel. Of course, if web design isn't your area of expertise or outside your comfort zone, you can always hire a professional Wix Website Designer who can update your website's design over time. So is it unprofessional to use Wix? Nope! Wix is a professional platform for companies around the world. Wix websites are at the top of Google along with the rest of the website platforms, and Wix is used by companies large and small around the globe for professional websites. - Wix Photo Editor
Does Wix have an Photo Editor? Yes, Wix has a great Photo Editor that's easy and fast to use and learn. As an expert Wix Designer, one of my favorite tools in Wix is their simple Photo Studio editor. You can flip, rotate and crop images, clip or cut them out so they have transparent backgrounds, adjust the saturation, contrast, or even run filters on them – all inside of Wix Editor, no need for Photoshop. Amazing. How do I edit pictures on Wix? Here's a video to show you how to make edits easily in the Wix Studio image editor: Here is what Wix's photo editor (called Photo Studio) looks like: Here are some instructions for quick reference: Directions to access Wix's Photo Editor Tool, called Photo Studio: Click on any Image, then click on the Crop icon tool above the image, or OR Click on a Gallery and click on Manage Media, select an image, then click on the round blue slider tool icon "Edit Image" above the image details OR Click on the Add Elements + Tool near the top left, and choose Image > View all under Site Images or Upload Images – this will show you the Media Library. Once in the Media Library, select any uploaded image, then click on the Crop icon tool above the image to access the Wix Photo Studio editor tool. Getting to the Wix Photo Editor from a Gallery: Once in the Photo Studio, then you can crop, cut out, adjust the image to your heart's desire. The great thing is that Wix will NOT save over the original image, so when you click on Save when done editing your photo in the Wix Photo Studio, it saves a new file (with _Edited appended to the filename). This way, you can edit your original image as many times as desired but still keep the same original image to use as well. Happy Wixing!

- Wix Designer Tip: Switching out Lightboxes on Homepage
Here are some tips on how to use Lightbox popups on your Wix website. I am not a huge fan of automatic popups, so I recommend to rarely use these as automatic popups, if at all. The best use of a Lightbox in my opinion is to open up a form/video/information in a popup after the user clicks on a button. If you are using an automated popup, keep it simple and if you can, have it popup on the side of the page so that your viewers can still see the site and navigate to what they are looking for. Here are some tips to turn Lighboxes on and off or to swap out different lightbox popups over time, keeping the old Lightbox popups in case you want to reuse them later: I ran into a client with a problem that she couldn't swap out Lightboxes without deleting the first one as the Lightbox settings wouldn't allow her to choose another lightbox even after she thought she turned it off from the page. The solution to changing a lightbox on any page – is that first the page needs to be “unchecked” in the Choose Pages panel of the Lighbox Settings, just clicking on “No” under “Automatically display lightbox on pages” will not release the checked pages from blocking other lightboxes from the page. Who would have thought?! So, Under "Automatically display lightbox on pages", select "Yes" and first make sure to uncheck the pages under "Which Pages is it on" – this will clear the page to allow for another lightbox to be placed on it. If you don't uncheck the page you want to add another Lightbox popup on, then Wix will block you from selecting that page with another lightbox, so this is a crucial step. You can leave “Yes” on if desired, because if you don’t have any pages checked, it won’t popup anyway, so it’s the same as clicking No. Wix should fix this so that the No overrides the checked pages under Yes. I spoke with Wix phone support who helped me figure out this issue, and he said he’d have them look into fixing this. So glad he knew the answer to the problem! Here are some other general tips on lightboxes: Happy Wixing! ... Do you need expert Wix design help? Reach out for a free estimate »
