Wix Designer Tips Wix Clean URLs New Feature – July 2016 As a Denver website designer, I design a lot of Wix websites for my clients. Up until now, Wix used somewhat cryptic URLs with hashbang symbols (#!) in the URL that were due to the AJAX technology and linking mechanism on their hosted platform. This was frustrating, you could build SEO 301 redirects to create simpler URLs for sharing, but they would still default to the messy looking URL. WELL, GOOD NEWS: Wix announced that they are in the process of updating the URL structure of all Wix websites. The new URLs will be much simpler, more memorable and even more SEO friendly – so we now have full control over the URLs of our pages on Wix. For example: Old URL: http://www.yourdomainame.com #!page-url/123456 New URL: http://www.yourdomainame.com /page-url HOW-TO: To update your Wix website URLs, first login in to your Wix.com dashboard, then visit this link below to update your URLs: www.wix.com/wix-site-url-migrator A couple notes from Wix: Any links to your old URLs will still work; they will be redirected to the new ones. Please read the Information about the URL Update before updating Wix URLs. If users create a new site after updating your URLs, the new site will have the old URL structure. You must click the link above again to update your new site URLs. Since the pages will be reported with the new, clean URLs, Google Analytics will treat them as different pages, unrelated to their older URLs. If Wix users have added any links, rules or goals that are based on the hashbang (#!) URLs, they will have to update them to the new URL structure.

Wix Designer Review of Parallax Effect Wix just added a new feature for background images – with Wix's new parallax scrolling, the background moves at a different speed to the foreground elements, creating depth and simple movement. Make sure to limit the use of this and use it wisely, as it can often be annoying or hard to view images this way. Scroll down this page to see how it works. To set your background image to parallax scrolling: Click Background on the top left side of the Editor (top Box icon) Click Settings on the background image preview. Click the toggle next to Parallax to enable or disable parallax scrolling: • Parallax is disabled. • Enabled: Parallax is enabled. Select an option: • Image is fixed: The background image has a fixed position so it will not move when scrolling. • Image scrolls with site: will scroll as user scrolls down or up. It also works best on longer scrolling pages to get the full effect. Scroll down to see Parallax effect: The Wix parallax background moves at a slower speed, making it look 3D. Parallax scrolling is a technique in web design where background images move slower than foreground images, creating an illusion of depth in a 2D scene and adding to the immersion. Selecting the right photo for the Parallax effect is important, not all photos will work well with this effect, so I typically test out several images and modify them to get one that works best with a layout. Wix has an amazing Site History feature that allows you to go back in time to any version of your site that you've published. Wix Designer Tips Wix's Site History Wix has an amazing tool that my client's love, it's called Site History. This tool allows users to go back in time to any version of their site that was published. So, if you make some edits to the website, and publish it, and then realize that your edits were wrong, or you messed something up on the site, you can easily go into the Site History tool and go back to any published version. The Site History tool is located in the main Wix login page after you login to Wix (not in the actual editor, but the login page where you click to get to the editor). So with Wix, you don't have to worry about breaking or messing up your site, as you can always go back in time and "undo" any mistakes. This gives Wix website clients peace of mind, especially if they are having multiple people edit their site, they don't have to worry about loosing anything. Wix Web Designer Tips Expanding the page size in Wix I just had a client ask me how to add more text to her page. This is a common question, with a simple answer, so I wanted to post a tip about it with a screenshot to show you just how to expand a page size in Wix, or simply enlarge a text box. 1. Click on text box 2. Click and hold on the bottom icon that has a downward arrow, then while holding down, drag the box downward to enlarge the page. You can then enter more text into this text box. In Wix, you can also copy and paste text boxes if you want to have more flexibility in moving them around on the page. Bonus Tip: If you drag an element downward on the page, it will also expand the page (make sure not to "add" it to the footer, unless the element is desired on every page. It is important to name your filenames when uploading Excel, Word or PDF files to Wix. Wix Web Designer Tips Filenames in Wix (.pdf, .doc, .xls, etc) I just had a client ask about a problem uploading an Excel file to their Wix site, it was giving them problems when they tried to upload the file through the Wix editor. I looked at the filename, and it included an ampersand (&) and spaces, so I removed those from the filename, and uploaded it to her website and it worked. I want to remind people it's important to name your filenames, especially for downloading, to have only letters and dashes – try to avoid spaces, and any other characters like the &%$ or it could hang you up when trying to upload to your Wix website. On another similar topic, with PDFs only, Wix renames the filenames to a long non-sensible name like "35ce93_550439b8778148c5a6cbfb9ddbcc3cf4.pdf" instead of your originally named filename. For example, if you have a PDF for downloading on your site with a filename of "Registration-Form.pdf", when the file is downloaded off of your website, it will be named by Wix's funky filename to be something like: "35ce93_550439b8778148c5a6cbfb9ddbcc3cf4.pdf". This is not ideal for customer use, as once they download the PDF, unless they rename it they will have a hard time knowing what that file is. There is a solution! Login to: www.wix.com with your user/password, then click on "Edit Website" to open the website builder editing system. Then click on the page dropdown in the editor, and select the page desired, and click on the three dots in a circle to the right of the page name. Here is how you can Implement Keywords with Wix's SEO Tools: Page Title: The Page Title is one of the most important things for SEO. Make sure to name your pages with keywords, and make sure the page has lots of good content related to those keywords. Building new pages for specific terms is a great idea, just make sure you provide lots of original content. Also, make sure to focus on a main keyphrase for your homepage and many pages on the site, don't overdo it with tons of keywords! Page Description: You can be more descriptive here in the page description, include your business name, and again include the keywords if possible. Write this for your audience, as this is the first thing they'll read about your page in the search results, so be short and sweet to let people know what the page is about. Page URL Name your page URL with your keywords! Punctiation is not allowed, and capitalization doesnt matter, you can only use letters and dashes here. So something like: www.picklewix.com /seo-hero will do. Keywords (Meta Keywords): Since lots of websites abused this meta tag, it's not considered highly used for search engine rankings. But, feel free to still use this field, it couldn't hurt, just make sure to only keep a few keywords or terms here, and be very specific to the page content. Don't overdo it with keywords, Google dislikes keyword stuffing. See below for an example of how the Page Title and Description show up in Google: 3. Ongoing SEO: Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process, so once you have your pages properly optimized with keywords, as explained above, then here's the rest of what you need to do: Add LOTS OF CONTENT! Become the expert. Google and all search engines love websites with lots of fresh content, so adding lots of content regularly will help your site perform well in SEO. Become the expert in your field, and make your website your platform! Blog, create pages about highly search topics related to your business, create a FAQ page about your service(s), etc. Image Alt Text (tags) are also important as they tell Google what the image is about. Using the keywords is important in these alternative text tags. 4. Submit your website to Google and other Directories: Setup a Google Search Console account for your website and submit and verify your website and sitemap (usually your domain name: www.domain.com/sitemap.xml) through the system. Submit to Bing, and also www.dmoz.org , a free directory service. 5. Get onto Social Media Search engines like Google now take social media into consideration when ranking sites. Adding more than one store in Wix - here's how you can do this. Wix Web Designer Tips Adding more than one store in Wix I often have clients ask how they can add two stores in Wix (for example, one for registration, and one for their products/classes). While you cannot add two stores in Wix, you can setup "Collections" (which are more often referred to as categories in other ecommerce platforms). See instructions and screenshots below: 1. Setup Product & Specify Collection: When setting up your products, make sure to scroll down to see the "Collections" field, and either choose an existing collection, or simply type one in to add a new collection category. 2. Add a Product Gallery to any page: and select the Collection category of choice to display. Click on "Wix Tips" in the menu to expand sub-menu to see all the topics we've covered.
