Our Ears When the vagal circuit is working, our middle-ear muscles change our capacity to hear predators or low-frequency sounds. Middle-ear muscles, like the muscles of the face, are regulated by the brainstem area that controls the mammalian vagal circuit. Typically, when there’s something in the environment that threatens us, we turn off the vagal circuit, because it inhibits our ability to hear quieter, more nuanced noises which can prohibit the ability to mobilize- essentially, ventral vagal engagement gets in the way of moving into fight or flee. Our Voice The vagal circuit is both communicative and responsive. We feel calmer when someone’s voice is even toned and soothing. The prosody (or modulation of pitch) changes in our voice when we feel safe or when we sense a threat and so hearing a voice that has a high pitch or is monotone communicates different messaging around safety. The larynx, or voice box, receives neural input from the two branches of the vagus nerve and impacts swallowing and ability to utter sounds. Our Eyes The eyes are one of our biggest allies because they quickly scan our environments for safety. Our Face As humans, we literally wear our heart on our face, and this is because of the vagus nerve. The muscles around the face and head are controlled by nerves that are connected to the ventral vagal circuit which is managed by specific brainstem areas. This happened over time and through evolution- while mammals’ vagus nerve has this brain-heart-face connection, reptilians do not. The vagus nerve innervates in the concha (inner canal portion of the outer ear) the lower neck, and the muscles in the larynx (voice box). Meaning, our ability to socially engaged is neurophysiologically linked to our eyes, our ability to listen, and read facial expressions. Wix now offers popup windows called lightboxes. Wix Designer Tips Popups in Wix (called Lightboxes) Wix just released the ability to add popups to any page on your Wix Website. This page shows you an example of how it works. You have full control over the design of the popup, and can add subscribe features, images, event info, etc. The new feature is called Lightboxes and can be found under the Wix + tool, called "Lightbox". My only caution: popups annoy people. Well, at least they annoy me. So if you're going to do it, make it worthwhile to your user!

Our Eyes Our eyes play a critical role in our ability to assess for safety in others and our environment. Our eyes are directly connected to the vagus nerve and allow us to orient to things that are around us. If we sense a threat, our pupils dilate to let more light in and improve our vision. Contrarily, when we are relaxed and in a parasympathetic state, our pupils constrict to reduce the amount of light that is entering. Our eye movements and gaze can indicate our current nervous system state. For example, an averted gaze may indicate that someone does not feel safe while eye contact can indicate feelings of safety and connection.

As a Wix Designer, I work on a lot of client websites in Wix, a great platform. However, there's always room for improvement, so here is my active wish list: Wix Feature Requests from an expert Wix Designer WIX WISH LIST As a Wix Web Designer, and I think that Wix is a great platform for small business websites. However, it does have, like all platforms, room for improvement! Below is my wish list for the top features I think Wix needs. The nice thing is, the Wix Wizards release new features all the time, so I'm hoping that since most of these needs are on their active Feature Requests are coming soon! Make sure to "Vote" for all of these features below to help make them happen, I have links below each request for active Feature Requests that you can vote for. I will update this page as I discover more needs and when the Wix Wizards release new updates that solve some of these missing features. WIX FEATURE REQUEST #1: Wix Stores – Ecommerce Functionality: Better Receipt Page Currently, the Wix shopping cart's "Thank You" receipt page doesn't have the items that the user ordered. It has an Order Number, and a Total Cost and Billing Address, but it doesn't list what the customer actually ordered. Why is this an issue? Because if the customer doesn't get the email confirmation of their order, they will not have a "receipt" of what they ordered. As an online shopper, I always print (or save a PDF) of all my online orders' receipt pages JUST IN CASE I don't get the email receipt, I have a record of what I ordered. Currently with Wix, the receipt page is very rudamentary, and could really use the full order details so a customer can print if desired. Vote for this feature here » WIX FEATURE REQUEST #2: Completed! February 2017 SSL For Wix Websites The Wix Wizards have added HTTPs to all Wix websites – the highest security standard certificate. This ensures all information and communication on your website is encrypted, authenticated and secured. This also helps with SEO: Google and other search engines now favor websites with SSL encryption, so this will help boost website search rankings. YES! WIX FEATURE REQUEST #3 – COMPLETED! Smart URLs for Wix Webpages While Wix used to use long and ugly page URLs, we now have the ability to name any page with the specific URL we want, for example: www.picklewix.com/page-name Thanks, Wix Wizards! WIX FEATURE REQUEST #4 Full Width Video (YouTube/Vimeo) Currently it's not possible to use a YouTube or Vimeo video at 100% width of the screen. While they do allow for full-width video backgrounds, these are autoplay and do not have audio. It would be great if we could use the "stretch" tool to make videos full screen. Wix Wizards, work your magic! WIX FEATURE REQUEST #5 Blog with Import & Commenting Functionality Currently it is not possible to import posts from another blog into the Wix blog (such as Wordpress), so if I have clients that have an existing blog, this means they (or I) would need to manually repost all the blog posts. If the original blog has years' worth of posts, this could take a long time! Vote for this feature here » Secondly, the Wix blog needs to have it's own built-in Commenting functionality. Currently you can only utilize comments through Facebook, Disqus or a Comments app, but none are built-in and therefore not fully controllable from the Wix blog. Wix thankfully has added a new feature that allow you to disable the main link in your dropdown menu. Whenever dropdown menus exist, a common complaint is that people often do not click on the main link in the menu if there is a dropdown (so if the "About" page has three subpages, people ususally click on the subpages rather than the "About" in the menu, so they never see the main About page). Wix has added a "Menu Dropdown" under the Add > in the Page editor panel, see the screenshot for reference. A "Menu Dropdown" is a non-clickable, top-level menu item. This feature can be used to group subpages together under a menu item that does not have a page of its own (that way, you don't miss users clicking on only the subpages in the dropdown menu). To add a menu dropdown: From the left side of the Editor, click the Pages icon > at the bottom of the Pages window, click Add > click Menu DropDown.

Instagram on Wix - some tips from a Wix Website Designer Wix Web Designer Tips Instagram on Wix Want to embed an Instagram feed on your site? There are lots of different ways to do this, but here are my two suggestions I find the easiest. Wix Instagram App: Wix has an Instagram feed app that's free and simple to add to your page ( Go to the Add + tool in your Wix editor, and find Social, and then scroll down to see the Instagram app. Or, search the App Market for "Instagram Feed" and simply add it to your site. The one limitation to this feed is that you have to connect it to your Instagram account, so if you don't have login access to the account you want to embed, it won't work. This app does have nice features to be able to select differnet header items (like a Follow button).
