Wix's Free Website Plan

Did you know that Wix offers a free plan that is free forever unless you delete your account or website? What’s great is that the free plan has all the same tools so you can easily edit/add images over time, it just has a little branding on the top (see the bar at the top of the example free Wix website above), and it won’t be tied to a custom domain. 

The only thing is that on the free plans there is limited storage (500MB of storage) so you may need to scale back your images – you are using 645.86 MB of storage, so you’ll need to scale back some of your images.

Wix Storage Manager:

If you have a free plan, you can keep track of your space used in their Storage Manager. The Storage Manager shows you all the files in your Wix website media library, and their file sizes so you can see which ones are hogging the most space:

https://manage.wix.com/my-account/site-selector/?siteType=HtmlWeb&actionUrl=https://www.wix.com/dashboard/%7B%7BmetaSiteId%7D%7D/storage-manager?&title=Select%20a%20site&buttonText=Go+to+Manage+Storage Note: The Storage Manager does NOT tell you where or IF they are used on the site, so you’ll have to figure that out if you decide to delete or replace them.  If you delete any from the Media Library and empty the trash, and they are used on the website, they WILL disappear and have a broken image link, so make sure to replace or remove any images you no longer want or replace them with smaller versions on the page in the editor if desired.

How to get back to the Wix Free Plan:

If you have a paid Wix Premium Plan but want to revert back to the free plan, you can cancel the plan you’re on, and it will stay live until your current plan is due for renewal.

Once it reverts to the free plan, it will disconnect from your own domain and be replaced with a free Wix domain (like this free website plan of a website I’m working on for a client and we haven’t launched it yet so it’s on the free plan, something like this example:  https://youraccountname.wixsite.com/website

Here’s how you get to the Cancel Plan and revert to a Free Plan in your Wix Dashboard:

In your Wix Dashboard, Click on Manage Plan > Then Click the three-dots Button next to the Premium Plan, in dropdown select Cancel Plan

I think it’s awesome that Wix still lets us have totally free sites – albeit, they do have the little line of branding at the top and you can’t use your own domain, and you’re limited to 500MB of storage, but I think it’s great for anyone on a budget such as artists or freelancers to showcase their work for free with a nice easy editor. Who knows, Wix may not offer their free plans forever, but so far they have for the past 15 years, so I hope they continue to. I use their free plans to build out my client websites for free while they review and we finalize the website, and then we purchase the Wix Premium Plan hosting (and domain if needed) when we're ready to launch. It’s great.
