Why does Wix run so slow? (Wix Harmony Editor)

Wix Harmony's editor runs extremely slowly and is hard to use.

I've had several clients come to me with Harmony websites that they've started but gave up as it was hard to make changes and the Harmony Wix editor runs very slowly. We usually end up moving them over to the Classic Wix Editor which runs great, and is much easier to customize than Wix Harmony websites. I'm happy to help people with their Harmony websites, and I understand their frustration with it.

Wix Harmony is Wix's new AI-focused builder designed for quick setups, while the Classic Editor provides traditional manual control. Unfortunately, the Harmony editor lags big time, and is buggy and is very limiting. Because Harmony AI relies heavily on heavy background scripts and constant AI loops to layout and process every single edit you prompt, it is a massive drain on computer and server resources. Harmony should be reloaded often to clear your browser's memory/cache, and even then, it is notoriously slow.

One client complained: “Harmony's long load times are frustrating, and the AI panel that keeps getting in my way, and their are weird screenshots on their help articles, and it seems quite buggy. Very hard to use.”

I also want to clarify: the slowness I am referring to is specific to the backend Wix Harmony Editor versus the front-end of the website or Wix websites in general:  All Wix websites on the Classic Editor, Harmony or Studio (if built properly) will load fast for your viewers (public viewing live website). In this article I'm talking about the fact that the Harmony backend editor is painfully slow to use to make website updates or edits. Harmony could be fine if you are satisfied with the out-of-the box template, and you don't need any changes to the overall layout or want to do updates regularly, but that's unlikely. Having control over your customization is important with website design to reflect your brand and needs, and updates are crucial for SEO and AI-EO so that your website can be found. I am sure Harmony will improve in time, afterall, it was just launched in January of this year. We are the beta testers. That's if Wix continues with Harmony support, it may go away like the Flash version of Wix or the more recent Editor X did when it was replaced by Studio. And eventually the classic Editor will no longer be supported. It sounds like there is another editor in the Wix works now anyhow, time will tell what editor will be their lead choice down the road. Whatever it is, I hope it's more in the vein of the classic Wix Editor, it's nice to have easy control of your website design.

Wix also offers Wix Studio (now Studio 2), which is a decent platform. However, it is best used by advanced Wix designers who are experienced and know how to use it, and have a lot of time to work on it. Studio offers more precise control of every aspect of your pages. Instead of the wonderfully simple drag-and-drop of the classic editor, it utilizes responsive CSS layouts, custom CSS styling, a full VS Code-like coding environment, and multi-breakpoint control. Studio is not easy to design or update by any means, as many changes require a lot of "tweaking" of the breakpoints for various screen sizes, then testing and making adjustments carefully with knowledge and skill. Both Harmony and Studio are not ideal for a business who wants to easily update their own website, the classic Wix Editor is still the best in the biz.

Wix is a great platform. The Classic Wix Editor, that is.

Wix Harmony, on the other hand, is their AI-based new editor that launched in January 2026, and is still buggy and it's AI-based Website Builder editor lags big time. Harmony uses a framework that runs heavy background processes and scripts that create long delays when you make or save changes. In other words, it's incredibly slow, even on a super fast fiber connection. When I work on my client's Harmony websites, the Harmony editor can lag for up to two minutes before showing edits. It can take a minute or more just to load the editor initially. Unlike the Classic Wix Editor, in Harmony you can't just click on items to change them, you have to use the AI prompts to make changes, which of course prompts more delays.

Wix Harmony loses what made the Classic Wix Editor great: the easy WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) drag and drop editor that functions like Photoshop or Canva in that you can move anything around on the page and fully customize each and every element manually, no prompting and waiting required. I'm sure Wix Harmony will improve over time, but it's not ideal to work in now. As it heavily uses AI, Harmony is a huge drain on resources, and it runs painfully slow because it's using AI for nearly every edit you make. It is also missing a lot of human functionality and features that are standard in the Classic Wix Editor, which Wix has been improving upon for over a decade. Harmony may get better, but for now I don't think it is a good platform for creating or editing websites.

How to Avoid Wix Harmony:

To avoid using Wix Harmony, you want to choose the classic Wix Editor. This can be difficult to do if you're setting up a new account with Wix, as it automatically funnels you into the Wix Harmony editor. To get around this, visit the Wix Templates page, the non-Harmony Wix templates which are on the classic editor start around page 39 of the templates. Choose one of the non-Harmony branded templates or blank templates to create a new site that uses the Classic Wix Editor.

Note: Wix says that it will continue to support the classic Wix editor websites into future, hopefully they truly will as the classic editor is far superior for easy editing than their Harmony or Studio platforms. Wix also said they have another new Editor in the works... of course change is inevitable in the digital world, and I hope that the new Editor they are working on is a huge improvement to Harmony. If Harmony could load and work faster, if it wasn’t so buggy, had all the features, and it had the same drag and drop WYSIWYG features that the classic editor has, I’d be more willing to setup clients on it, but it’s not a good version of the Wix platform offerings right now unfortunately. I revisit Harmony every time a client comes to me with one they can't edit, to see if the Harmony editor has improved, but I keep running into huge lag times and bugs so I'm avoiding it if possible. I can understand why clients are frustrated with Harmony! It's such a far cry from the classic Wix editor, which is still the best in the website builder business.

Can I change from Wix Harmony to Wix editor?

Yes, but you have to rebuild your website into the Classic Wix Editor. There is no easy "import" function. Luckily, most of the clients that come to me with a Wix Harmony website started have not gotten far (due to the lags and lack of easy editing ability), so we are able to easily move them onto the Classic Wix Editor to design and update going forward.

What about Wix Studio?

Wix Studio (now Studio 2) is a much more robust editor that requires a lot more developer training to be able to edit. I still recommend the Classic Wix Editor over Wix Studio unless you have a large budget, and have a budget to have an ongoing website developer like myself to work on updates for you over time. The Classic Wix Editor is great because people can quickly learn how to edit their websites easily, so it beats out the Wix Studio and Harmony platforms if you want more control over your website.
